Website Notes Year 4 – Term 62017

We are looking forward to sharing lots of creative work this term.

It would be helpful for children to have their PE kit in school every day because we often have sporting opportunities for the children to take part in. Children are expected to have a white t-shirt, black shorts and trainers or plimsolls. The children will be expected to join in PE, even if they forget their kit.

The P.E. days for each class are listed below:

Mrs. Bromley: Wednesday

Mr. Davies: Wednesday

Mrs. Hopper: Wednesday

During term 5, the children have been working on an exciting topic about bees. We will be completing this topic during our first week back, where the children will have the opportunity go on nature walks around the school grounds, look at the habitats of insects and even participate in some honey tasting.

This term we will also be starting our final history topic on Anglo-Saxons. The children will have the opportunity to learn about Anglo-Saxon settlements, religion and beliefs, daily life and key figures such as Alfred the Great. In art, the children will practice their painting techniques before producing a piece of work about The Bayeux Tapestry. In Science we will learning about evaporation, the water cycle and habitats.

In English we will be studying poetry, non-chronological report and stories from the past. We expect the children to read 5 times a week as well as practise spellings. Now the children are older, we expect them to fill in their own diaries, where possible, and take responsibility for their learning. Please can you check they are recording the title, pages read, making a comment and writing HR for a home read.

In Maths we will continue to practise our times tables knowledge and revisit our work on division. We will also be looking at shapes and their properties. We will be doing lots of problem solving and reasoning so the children can apply their growing skills.

Here are some ways you can support your child during Year 4

  • Sit together and make a timetable to help them organise when they can do their homework. ( 5 reads, spellings to learn and times tables to practise)
  • Practise using maths in everyday situations. For example: reading time, giving change in shops, working out how many apples are needed for everyone’s lunch boxes that week.
  • Help the children get into a routine of emptying book bags after school and collecting things they need for the next day.
