Web Advisory Committee

Wednesday, November 5, 2014 | 2:30pm | OISE KITL Lab

Attendees: James Mason (chair, Music), Gordon Belray (ITS), Maria Buda (Dentistry), Vincci Lui (Gerstein), Angela Hamilton (UTSC), Judith Logan (Robarts), Joanna Szurmak (UTM), Jesse Carliner (Robarts), Lisa Gayhart (ITS), Margaret Wall (Library Admin), Heather Buchansky (Library Admin), Brandon Fratarcangeli (TALint student, Library Admin), Bilal Khalid (ITS), Lari Langford (Robarts), Graeme Slaght (Copyright), Kate MacDonald (Trinity), Jen Robertson (CDD), Tracy Zahradnik (Engineering)

Regrets:

1. Selection of a minutes-taker

  • Heather Buchansky volunteered

2. Minutes of the September meeting

  • Accepted without changes

3. Business arising from the minutes

  • Lisa has sent around Web Style Guide via email to WAC listserv (note: it is also posted in Staff Intranet in the Authorship section)
  • continue to email Bilal with specific examples of inconsistent ‘search within’ Endeca catalogue search results
  • Lisa will wait to invite Ref Services to contribute to Subjects A-Z video tutorials at a later date

4. Updates from ITS – Lisa Gayhart

Website redesign

  • have been focused on Drupal issues and vulnerabilities in the recent weeks (refer to item #5)
  • Judith has been working on location map to show where all libraries are located on campus
  • map will need to be hosted in Drupal (not being done through Google Maps)

5. Drupal vulnerability – Bilal Khalid & Lisa Gayhart

  • Drupal content creator received an email re: Drupal platform vulnerability, which was detected early to mid-October
  • learned that an attempt to hack sites was made, and could install malicious scripts
  • UTL site probably wasn’t comprised, but was best to take pre-emptive precautionary measures, and returned site to a date in early October
  • ‘One Search’ site has been updated, and currently working on other library sites (Gerstein, Engineering, etc..)
  • content editors would have been notified, received an Excel file with site
  • if one of the sites with digital signage, that may also be affected
  • People who have content which requires modification have already been contacted
  • Note: everything is archived, content has not been lost
  • contact Bilal with any questions – this is a top priority until restoration is complete

6. Creative Commons license for website content created by UTL staff – Graeme Slaght & Lisa Gayhart

  • Questions/suggestions arose at summer senior staff presentation in summer re: applying Creative Commons (CC) license to content on the site, which were passed on to Schol Comm & Copyright (SCC) group
  • SCC conducted environment scan and short proposal, which will be shared soon
  • License is meant toencourage dissemination of content
  • content may also increase findability
  • CC license also has an outreach component, esp. if created in time alongside new library website launch
  • would use Creative Commons BY license
  • will need to decide what can't be included and allow library staff to opt-out if they choose
  • Suggestions /questions from group:
  • would be nice to develop a notification page footer
  • how does CC citation look?
  • how granular would the license get? Would media/photos still have own license
  • Contact Lisa or Graeme with any questions

7. Other business

“Disallowed key characters” error – Lisa Gayhart

  • librarians have received many complaints about 'disallowed key characters' error message when using the 'One Search' box
  • no pattern to errors received has been detected (not in a particular time/place, browser issue, very intermittent)
  • ITS has been requesting additional info to replicate it to receive error message, but hasn’t been able to
  • refer users experiencing this error toLibAnswer FAQon this topic and/or report to ITS

LibCal – Gordon Belray

  • location field cannot currently be isolated to display in main area of LibCal
  • getting a better handle on the LibCal display, and will see what can be done

Next meeting: Wednesday, December 3, 2014
