Job purpose

We need a remarkable person to take on this exciting role in making a difference to how children and parents affected by brain tumours are cared for and cured. As the person responsible for ourChildren and Families Services, you willhave a passion for improving the lives of young people and parentstogether with the ability and appetite to significantly scale up our services using digital platforms to improveoutcomes for all families affected by this devastating disease. In leading this service, you will have a direct impact on the lives behind the appalling statistics that brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of those under forty.

Reporting to the Director of Services and Influencing, this role requires someone with initiative and resilience to develop our current service using digital platforms and the optimal use of data so we can reach every family, as well as identifying and offering direct support to those of the highest unmet need. Children and families and young adults are the groups for whom we have a dedicated service, due to the life-long and family wide impact of the disease. You will be contributing directly to our commitment to improve life today for young people and their parents, ensuring they have equal access to the best treatment and care and facilitating their involvement in research.

In this role, you will also build and maintain partnershipswith others key tosupporting children and families, such as health care professionals, schools andother local service providers. Internally, you will workacross the Charity so thatevery familyhas accessto all of the information and opportunities that the Charity offers, including our patient app and research opportunities. You will work to ensure the services provided are accessible to all, regardless of geography or ability.

The role will require you to work directly although primarily through digital means, with children, young adults and parents living with a brain tumour. You will need to act at a national level to be an advocate on behalf of parents and patients, providing emotional and practical support when required and know what other services may be suitable.

The person

The successful candidate will be a talented and highly motivated individualand a qualified social worker,with a proven track record. It is preferable for you to have been involved in digital transformation in providing support and information or at the very least be curious and keen to do so. An engaging, inspiring and dedicated professional,you will be a strong communicator with the ability to relate to families, local authorities, schools and health professionals alike and able to adapt your communication style with ease between these differing groups. As well as excellentinterpersonalskillsyou will have the ability to identify opportunities, manage a team and deliver digital-enabled change. The Brain Tumour Charity is moving at a fast pace so we are looking for someone that has an enthusiasm and passion for our work and a conviction to deliver positive outcomes for those that are affected by this disease.

Key accountabilities

  1. To work with the Children and Families team and Director of Services& Influencing to develop and transform how our Children and Families Services are delivered across the UK, in line with our digital strategy, to reach all families.
  2. To manage the Children and Families team and work with them to scale up our services using digital platforms.
  3. Together with the Support and Information Manager for adults and the Young Adults manager, offer a range of services on and off line to families, prioritised by impact,covering: information in multiple formats and mediums; Charity delivered direct support and advocacy; Charity facilitated online peer information and support; and referral to specialist/local services provided by third parties
  4. To work with the rest of the Charity in involving and engaging families in all that the Charity has to offer, including the development of our patient app (BRIAN) in particular
  5. To build upon our Young Adults Manager to ensure the services are complementary and integrated.
  6. To work with the Head of Strategy and Directorin drawing insights and monitoring the impact of our services.
  7. Work through our Healthcare Engagement teamat a range of institutions to raise awareness of the Children and Families Services, ensuring that health professionals signpost their patients to The Charity.
  8. To develop partnerships with other local and specialist service providers to meet the needs of families
  9. Work to raise awareness of clinical trials available to children with brain tumours and their involvement in other forms of research.
  10. Proactively develop online and offline resources for schools who have a child affected by a brain tumour to ensure they are aware of the side affects of brain tumours and how to best support the child and family.
  11. Raise awareness of our charitable activities including the research we fund and fundraising opportunities.
  12. To update and maintain accurate information on the CRM database, ensuring that all records are maintained and data protection laws are fully complied with.
  13. To attend relevant conferences, events and seminars when required, to increase awareness of The Charity and improve our Services.

  • Contribute to achieving the overall objectives of The Brain Tumour Charity.
  • Undertake any additional and ad hoc tasks as required.
  • Participate in team meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Provide written reports to the Head of Fundraising.
  • Represent The Charity at external events in a professional manner.
  • Participate in the supervision and appraisal process.

Essential / Desirable
Qualifications
Educated to degree level or equivalent (preferably in a related subject such as Psychology, Social Work etc) / Degree / Higher degree in relevant subject.
Qualified social worker
Experience
Proven track record in a similar role for at least two years. / Experience of leading a small team
Experience of working with children and families in need. / Experience of working with people affected by neurological disorders and/or people affected by brain tumours
Experience of digital-led change, / Data insights and project management to budget and time
Proven experience of identifying, working to and delivering on Key Performance Indicators and clearly demonstrating impact. / Knowledge of dealing with bereavement
Ability to work as a part of small, flexible team and contribute to group and individual targets / Some marketing and PR experience including delivering presentations
Working with volunteers / Working for a small charity
Worked in a health setting
Knowledge
Knowledge of the NHS and its structures / Experience of working directly with NHS staff at different levels
Knowledge of local and national Government and their structures / Experience of influencing officials to instigate change
Knowledge of health, the human brain, cancer or head injury / Knowledge of brain tumours and their affects
Skills and Abilities
