We had our first DSA Wellness Meeting on January 26, 2009

Items in discussion: 
Food Environment, Vending Machines, Fruit, , Information from Charter 
School lunch program, Fundraising events to involve more healthy 
options, Food Service involvement, no kitchen at DSA, one hour before 
and after breakfast/lunch at school rule, Student School Store 
(PTSO), Wellness Policy and SB46 – bill regulate foods served in snack 
type items and areas to reduce sodium. – this involves fundraising 
events, school store, and more. Recycling and after school events and 
activities. 
February 5th at 11:15 in the lunchroom started off the Live Well Games 
Wake it up, Shake it up, Mix it up, Give it up, Live it up… via Katie 
McCannon J&W intern of Cathy Schmelter – Students projects to include 
a drawing or journal, there are student and teacher prizes. The games 
are in May. Find out more from Dawn and ask your Kids 
March 20th Dawn has organized a 9 News Health Fair at the school and 
needs volunteers for that day. Please contact Dawn to help. Training 
date TBA, 12 stations with 24 kids helping at the booths. Some 
booths are Drug and Alcohol, Nutrition, CPR/Stroke booth.

Talked about a box of exercise items in the office for students to 
check out during lunch and afterschool. Items may include: 
footballs, Frisbee’s, jump ropes, basketballs,

Talked about starting a networking free site on the web to include the 
wellness policy and parents/students and others to join, have

Join with PTSO – school store run by parents and all school awareness.
The vending machine in the lunch room has spaces for fruit and other 
healthy bars, regulations of using the refrigerated machine, adjust 
the price reasonable for kids to purchase healthy. 
A DPS assessment: The process of the assessment is for parents to 
gather a group together to take it. This 
usually consists of the principal, nurses, teachers, parents and 
students. If you have 
the right people at the table, it usually takes about ½ hour to 
complete. 
What are your three top priorities for DSA wellness? Bring your ideas 
and support in to the next meeting.
