We are now entering the 2014 holiday season, with this time of year comes holiday shopping, visiting with family and friends and holidays away from home. Unfortunately during this same time we see an increase in crimes of opportunity like thefts from motor vehicles and residential break and enters. Many of which can be prevented. The malls will be very busy throughout the month; many people will be rushing around and we wanted to make sure we shared some crime prevention tips with you. We know your gifts and valuables will be placed in vehicles and so do thieves.
The following are some safety tips that can help you protect yourself and your property during the holidays:

-  If you are out shopping and return to your vehicle to drop parcels off ensure you put them in the trunk or in a covered area. Also make sure that your vehicle is locked before leaving.

-  When parking your vehicle at home, again ensure that all valuables have been removed, do not leave GPS units, cell phones electronics etc. in plain view. Also ensure that the vehicle is secured.

-  If having a gathering at home, make sure that you keep all doors locked and allow your guests entry, do not leave doors open as it allows unwanted people to come into the home very easily.

-  While out for the evening consider leaving some lights on within your home, ensure that all doors and windows are locked before heading out.

-  If you are going away, or in the case of students who are returning home for the holidays make sure that all property is properly secured, doors and windows are locked and consider the use of light timers as they give the appearance of someone being present.

-  Make a neighbor who you trust aware of your travel plans and have them pick up any flyers or junk mail that may be on your driveway or doorway. Also ask them to clear a path in the event of snow while you are gone or having them park a car on the driveway.

-  DO NOT publicize your travel plans on any type of social networking websites (Facebook), these plans may be shared inadvertently with people who you do not want knowing.

We can all work together to help make the holidays the enjoyable time of year they should be.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, all the best for the Holiday season.
