Welcome Rysewyk’s Rockets! I am so very excited to be your teacher this school year.
We are going to have a wonderful adventurelearning together.
Classroom Rules: In addition to The Leader in Me 7 Habits and PBIS, I have 3 simple rules. They are: 1.) Be Respectful 2.) Be Responsible 3.) Do Your Best
Planner (Agenda): Every child will manage a planner where he/she will record each day’s homework and important information. This planner will be kept in his/her AVID binder. We will check your child’s planner each morning to ensure that it is filled out correctly. I ask that you sign your child’s planner each evening confirming that his/her homework has been completed. Your child’s planner is a very effective way for you to communicate messages to me since we will be checking them each morning. Your child’s AVID binder will hold important resources that will be used daily at school and at home. It will contain: Planner, HW Folder, Classwork/Assessments, Logins/Passwords, Reference Materials, and much more.
Grades: Grades will be weighted this school year. All assessments will count twice in the grade book. I hold the belief that we all learn best by being given plenty of opportunities to practice a skill. I stamp the classwork with “practice work/no grade given” when assignments have been used to rehearse a skill. I also believechildren should be given the opportunity to learn from his/her mistakes. Because of this, I give all graded classwork back to the studentsto make corrections and get assistance. For all assignments not turned in, a score of 0% will be recorded. All students are given many opportunities throughout the school day to get their work completed and corrected.
Grades are not subjective. I base all of my grades on the scores/data I receive from your child’s work. When it comes time for quarterly benchmark assessments and ultimately the End of Grade Tests, your child’s grades should closely align with the grades on the report cards.
Homework: Each morning your child will fill out his/her planner with the homework for the evening. All completed activities need to be “checked-off” by the student and initialed by a parent in the planner. This is checked each morning.
*Please feel free to “help” your child arrive at the answer to difficult problems. However, please do not give him/her the answers. Guiding him/her to arrive at the answers is much more meaningful and long lastingthan “giving” answers. If homework is particularly difficult for your child at any given time, please let me know so that I can offer more assistance and remediation in the classroom. Homework is always due the next day.
*Homework will consist of 5 math problems, 20 minutes of reading and a short word study list to review. ***If your child is not fluent in his/her multiplication facts 0-12, this must be practiced each evening. (This was a 3rd grade standard.) Each Quarter, a Study Island Goal Sheet will be sent out to complete. Completion of it will be for extra credit.
Flexible Seating: Our class is using flexible seating for optimal learning. The premise is to create inviting, comfortable seating along with student choice to promote higher learning. The children will have the opportunity to sit in the flexible seating with their demonstration of good behavior and no grades below a B. Students will use a cubby and along with a coat hook to store their supplies.
Snacks: A snack calendar will be sent home every month. Each student is assigned 1 day a month in which to bring in a healthy snack for each student in the class. This helps cut down on the cost of snacks and ensures that the students receive a nutritious snack each day to help them through their rigorous school day. The snack calendar will be located in the Important Information section of your child’s AVID binder as well as on my class webpage.
Technology: We will use technology often in class and at home for homework. It is imperative that students use the school-issued laptop for school purposes only. Often, students will visit other sites (gaming, videos, movies, etc.) and viruses pop up on their computer. This creates all kinds of problems. You will be asked to sign a Laptop Agreement Form when the computers are issued that promises to use the laptop for school only.
We will use the technology for global learning, research, learning programs, writing, board building, coding, and so much more. It is a really exciting time to be a student with access to the world at his/her fingertips. The students will also be learning about Internet safety and digital responsibility.
