Restoration Technician Assistant

The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group is looking for an individual to fill a Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) opening. The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and protection of salmon resources. Our goals are primarily met by educating and involving the community in hands-on stream restoration activities. This position would primarily assist staff and volunteers with habitat monitoring, salmon restoration, and caring for a native plant nursery. This position also assists with volunteer recruitment, training and coordination as well as the delivery of education and outreach programs.

Pay: Minimum wage through AmeriCorps program (currently $8.55/hr)

Duration: October 2, 2010 – September15, 2011

Benefits: Health Insurance provided by AmeriCorps program. After completing 1700 hours of service a scholarship of $5,350 is available from AmeriCorps

Requirements:

  • Must be 18-25 years old
  • Must reside in WashingtonState at time hiring
  • Must be able to provide own transportation (mileage will be reimbursed)
  • Must be willing to commit to working 40 hours per week,
  • Able to perform physically demanding manual labor outdoors, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain in all types of weather.
  • Able to safely use small power tools (weedeater etc)
  • Willing to apply herbicide under the supervision of a licensed operator
  • Must have interest in salmon or watershed ecology

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work with restoration technicians and volunteers to conduct environmental monitoring of restoration projects, including salmon spawning surveys, native vegetation and instream habitat
  • Recruit, train, and manage community volunteers of all ages for salmon enhancement projects
  • Assist with planning and implementation of riparian revegetation projects
  • Work with volunteers to manage native plant nursery. Work will include obtaining native plants, potting plants, weeding, watering and other maintenance needed at the site
  • Assist with the delivery of environmental education programs to children in and out of the classroom, and the implementation of service learning projects with local schools and youth groups
  • Perform other field and office duties appropriate to monitoring, revegetation and environmental education programs
  • Use computer programs and databases such as MS Office to manage data and create presentations

Position Description

Position Summary: The Restoration Technician Assistant is an individual placement through the Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) program with the Washington Department of Ecology. The individual is the employee of the Department of Ecology and placed with and supervised by the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group. This position primarily assists staff and volunteers with habitat monitoring, salmon restoration, and caring for the native plant nursery. This position also assists with volunteer recruitment, training and coordination as well as the delivery of education and outreach programs. The WCC intern will be supervised by Skagit Fisheries Restoration Ecologist.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Work with restoration technicians and volunteers to conduct environmental monitoring of restoration projects, including salmon spawning surveys, native vegetation and instream habitat
  • Recruit, train, and manage community volunteers of all ages for salmon enhancement projects
  • Assist with planning and implementation of riparian revegetation projects
  • Work with volunteers to manage native plant nursery. Work will include obtaining native plants, potting plants, weeding, watering and other maintenance needed at the site
  • Assist with the delivery of environmental education programs to children in and out of the classroom, and the implementation of service learning projects with local schools and youth groups
  • Regularly update and maintain restoration program worklog database
  • Perform other field and office duties appropriate to monitoring, revegetation and environmental education programs
  • Use computer programs and databases such as MS Office to manage data and create presentations

Development and Performance:

  • Attend and assist with three weekend volunteer monitoring workshops organized by SFEG
  • Attend and assist with planning and preparing for fall and spring weekend volunteer planting parties
  • Utilize SFEG office and computer station
  • Keep accurate and up to date records of native plants in SFEG’s nursery
  • Submit quarterly reports regarding activities and plant use at the Nursery to Restoration Ecologist
  • Schedule and manage nursery maintenance activities and volunteers
  • Make at least one presentation regarding program activities to SFEG Board and staff
  • Additional development goals may be added or changed during regular WCC performance evaluations
  • Participate in quarterly evaluations and prepare quarterly reports for DOE
