ROLE:Brighton Running Events Intern (unpaid)

REPORTING TO:Sarah Canniford, Event Fundraising Executive

REMUNERATION:Reimbursement of travel expenses within Greater London,

lunch allowance of up to £6/day (where the working day is more than 6 hrs)

LOCATION:WaterAid head office (Vauxhall, London SE11)

TIME COMMITMENT:4-5 days a week for 7 months

BACKGROUND:

WaterAid's aim is to help some of the world’s poorest people to enjoy the benefits that safe water and basic sanitation can bring. We work with local partners, who understand local issues, and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real need. We also campaign locally and internationally to change policy and practice and ensure water and sanitation’s vital role in reducing poverty is recognized.

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

This volunteer role has been created to support the growing, dynamic Events team. The main purposeof this post is to help maximise WaterAid’s income from the Brighton Marathon and Brighton Half Marathon by helping to promote these events, liaise with supporters and provide administrative support. These are two major events for WaterAid and we have ambitious plans to develop them. These plans rest on us maintaining a high level of supporter care, something that this role will be pivotal in helping us to deliver. We are also currently expanding our online methods of recruitment so experience using social media such as Twitter is desirable. You will also be required to help with other events as required, such as the Virgin London Marathon.

This role is ideal for someone wishing to pursue a career in Events Fundraising.

EXAMPLES OF TASKS:

  • To act as a first point of contact for enquiries, providing suitable support and materials where possible and referring enquirers to other team members where appropriate.
  • To send out fundraising packs to all the participants that sign up and ensure all participants receive a call to welcome them onto the team.
  • To maintain regular contact with the participants in the build up to the events to ensure their training and fundraising is on track
  • To help create and distributee-newsletters to event participants
  • To actively seek out potential stories from participants to appear in press releases.
  • To help write articles to appear on external running websites
  • To take responsibility for promoting these events using social media such as facebook, twitter and leap anywhere
  • To maintain and update theevent team budget records.
  • To ensure the events web pages are up to date and accurate and fully reflect the team’s activities.
  • In consultation with the Event’s team research new marketing outlets in Brighton
  • Liaise with the other fundraising teams to ensure they are aware of the Brighton events
  • To help maintain and update the Raisers Edge database which could include inputting enquiries, new contact details, event participation and income monitoring. Make sure this is up to date at all times.
  • To support the team with the checking of income received.
  • Provide on the day support for both Brighton Events

RELEVANT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Experience

  • Experience of working in an office environment.
  • Experience of managing multiple tasks to deadlines and prioritising own workload.
  • Experience of using Social Media, e.g Twitter

Skills and qualities

  • An interest in fundraising
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Confidence to deal with supporters face to face and by telephone.
  • Excellent organisation skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to provide support to individuals, organisations and companies at all levels.
  • To have a methodical approach to work with the ability to initiate, implement and complete tasks to a high standard and with minimum supervision.
  • Good IT skills – competent at word and excel
