Introduction

The water and soil temperatureprobe is a common sensor used in water management systems, and Agro-Met applications. This guide will describe the proper method of connecting the sensor with Sutron’s 9210 datalogger.

SensorOptions

There are two types of probes that Sutron typically uses. One is a small discrete sensor that requires a Steinhart equation to compute the value, and the other is a slightly larger sensor that has a linear output. Sizes of the sensor are specified by the last number in the part sequence.

Mounting Solutions

Mounting options for this type of sensor are site specific. There are no standard mounting kits that come with the sensor. Typically this sensor is installed in protected conduit and guided into the water. The sensor can also be placed directly in the ground to monitor the soil temperature without needing any additional equipment.

Wiring Diagrams

5600-0030

Physically connecting the 5600-0030temperature sensor is a simple task. The sensor comes with a resistor that is strapped to the cable near the sensor head. Connect the sensor to any analog channel on the 9210. The analog channels are all located on the lower terminal strip. The black wire goes to ground and the white wire connects to the channel. For the image below, the sensor is connected to channel 1. Also, make sure to connect the completion resistor that comes with the sensor in between VREF and the analog channel of the sensor, as shown in the image below. If the temperature probe is being measured via an external 8080-0003 analog module, then the resistor is not required.

5600-0010

The 5600-0010 model of the temperature sensor provides a linear output. It is a three wire sensor that needs to be connected to ground, an analog channel, and an excitation channel. There also needs to be a jumper wire that connects the excitation channel to VREF. Please note that only channels 1-8 can be used as the excitation channel. The wiring diagram below shows one way to wire the sensor to a 9210.

Common Configurations

The 9210 utilizes a graphical setup in order to configure the sensors that are connected. The graphical setup is a series of blocks connected to depict a diagram showing how the data is managed. A typical series of blocks would be an Input, Display, Coms Tag, Measurement, and then a Log block. With this series the sensor would be measured based on the parameters of the input block, then the value would be visible on the front display of the logger, the data tab in the graphical setup would be updated, the measurement interval is defined, and then the value is logged in the log file. Alarms can also be added to the data management series by placing an alarm block before the Coms Tag block. For more detail on how to program a 9210, use the 9210 Operations and Maintenance Manual. The descriptions below will provide a concise description of common measurement setup for the temperaturesensor measured every 15 minutes.
