  1. Identify safety and security risks for women and childrenthat are important to water and sanitation systems. Location, design and maintenance programmes mustmaximize and fully make sure ofwomen’s and children’ssafety and security
  • Make an analysis of the situation to get information about the community, common practices and safety and security issues for women and girls
  • Talk to women and girls separately from the menabout safety and security issues
  • Give special attention to needs of vulnerable groups of women and children, female/child headed households, older women, adolescent girls, unaccompanied children, persons with disabilities etc.

  1. Talk to women, older peopleand persons with disabilities to decide the location, design and maintenance of water and sanitation places
  • Both men and women should be mobilized and be given equal decision-making responsibility
  • Make sure that all users, especially women and girls, participate in identifying risky hygiene practices and situations, and that all users share responsibility to reduce risks
  • Talk with women to find out the best way of throwing away/washing of sanitary pads

  1. Make communal bathing and washing placesafter talking to women, persons with disabilities, older peopleand child protection actors to make sure that using these are safe and have privacy
  • Bathing and washing places should be central, accessible and with good lightingfor safety of users
  • Bathing places should be separated for women and men and have doors with locks on the inside

  1. Make latrines after talking with women, persons with disabilities, older people and child protection actors to maximize safety, privacy and dignity
  • Think aboutpeople’s usual habits when deciding the type of latrines to be built
  • Ask women and children what they thinkto make sure they feel – and are – safe using the latrines at all times of day and night

  1. Make and put water points in areas that are accessible and safe for all, with special attention to the needs of women and children (girls especially)
  • Make hand pumps and water carrying containers that can be used by women, childrenand other vulnerable people

  1. Set up accessible, well understood mechanisms for suggestions and complaints
  • Respond to all complaints
  • Talk to communities when responding to their needs and adapt the programming
  • Report and share protection concerns with the protection focal point in your area

6. Ensure monitoring and responsibility - Seek support from protection focal points to set up:
  • Protection referral pathways: child protection and GBV specific ones
  • Mechanisms to monitor: cases of sexual exploitation and abuse, the use of referral mechanisms
  • Awareness messaging on GBV concerns on WASH including in WASH awareness raising activities
  • Inform all staff and implementing partners on the Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) Code of Conduct and ensure understanding
