About the WarsawUniversity of Life Sciences [Szkoła Główna Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie, SGGW] Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Located in the capital city of Poland, the Warsaw University of Life Sciences-WULS [Szkoła Główna Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego w Warszawie, SGGW], formerly Warsaw Agricultural University, is the oldest agricultural academic school in Poland, dating back to 1816. At present, the university consists of 28 faculties, there are about 27,000 students currently enrolled. Students can choose between 27 major disciplines and 60 areas of specialisation. Since September 2007, SGGW has belonged to the EUROLEAGUE network of the leading Universities of Life Sciences in Europe (Swedish Agricultural University- SLU; Copenhagen University; University of Life Sciences in Vienna - BOKU; Wageningen University; Hohenheim University; Prague Agricultural University).

The new campus of Warsaw University of Life Sciences is located in Ursynów. The Palace of Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz is the main building. In that house is the University's administrative authorities. The campus is made up of 47 buildings (total usable space of 200,000 m2), student dormitories (3800 bed spaces), facilities such as the Sport Centre (sport halls, swimming pool), SGGW IKAR Hotel, the Main Library, and the building with the conference hall - better known as the Crystal Auditorium, where most celebrated academic events take place. More info can be found on the webpage,

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1927 and has since then provided education, research and development, veterinary services and many other activities. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is the leading veterinary faculty in Poland with the novel large and small animal clinics and modern, well-equipped laboratories in basic and clinical veterinary sciences. There are approx. 120 members of academic/teaching staff. Each year a total of 200 students are accepted at the Veterinary Faculty, (while 1100 in total enrol). Research and teaching are perfectly balanced. All academic staff members spent their post-doctorates in high-rank veterinary, animal science or biotechnology universities/research institutions in North America, Asia and Europe. Their research experiences are promptly transferred to educating the students at SGGW.

The veterinary teaching program is accredited by the National Accreditation Committee (PAKA). The Faculty offers several advanced degree programs in veterinary medicine. Since the academic year 2007/8, one course in veterinary medicine is offered specifically to international students (present enrolment is 180). For postgraduate students, the Faculty offers 3-4 year PhD courses in basic and clinical sciences. The PhD courses have functioned successfully since 1992. Every year over 10 postgraduates are enrolled. More info can be found on the webpage, For further information contact: , .

SGGW Degree Programme

The course takes five and half years (11 semesters). Graduates are awarded the EU scheduled qualification [Dyplom lekarza weterynarii/Diploma of Veterinary Surgeon]. According to EU regulations, it enables graduates to practise legally in the European Community member countries.

This program is taught exclusively in English. From start to finish, SGGW gives graduates the necessary experience to enter the veterinary profession with confidence.

Five & a half year (VS) Degree Programme

The five & half-year VS degree program at SGGW consists of 75 total obligatory courses and electives held in Warsaw, Poland, over five & half academic years. Each academic year starts in October, and finishes in June. The VS diploma is received after successfully passing all exams. Each academic year is divided into two semesters, with substantial winter and summer breaks. The program is rigorous, with students taking roughly 860 hrs of classes (60 ECTS) per year (the total minimum number of teaching hours is 5100, and the total minimum ECTS number is 330). A brief overview is as follows:

Entrance Exams

SGGW Entrance Exams are designed to demonstrate a student’s knowledge of basic biology and chemistry. Such knowledge is a prerequisite for success in any SGGW degree programme.

Students with a BSc degree or university-level course credit in the Life Sciences (including IB or AP Biology and IB or AP Chemistry) may be exempt from doing the Entrance Exam, depending on each individual case plus certain subjects in 1st and 2nd year.

The exam is in English and questions are in “multiple choice” and/or “fill-in-the-blank” formats. Answers must be given in English.

Exams are monitored and timed by SGGW representatives; students have approximately 2 hours to complete the exam. Download a list of exam topics covered on the entrance examinations, along with sample questions, by visiting the IMS website: . (The list of topics required to know appears at the bottom of this info-pack). An example of the test is attached to this info pack.

Entrance exams are held three times a year, throughout Europe and at the university itself. Visit or contact for an update on venues and times.

Completed exams will be sent directly to SGGW for evaluation.

Applicants will be notified by email 48 hours after the date of the exam. In Scandinavian countries, the results of the exams are available 2 hours after the exams. Applicants who fail the May exam can re-register for the August exam, or better yet, register for the Premedical Preparation Course.

Entrance Exam will take place in Warsaw, Slovakia, Ireland, UK, Germany, Cyprus, Oslo, Stockholm, India and Israel on 5/2013 and 7/2013.

Online Preparation Course

The University entrance exam is a standardised examination that students are required to pass in order to be accepted to the University. So, how can students best prepare themselves for this examination? IMS has designed an Online Preparation Course to help students master basic concepts in Life Sciences, focusing on the fields of Chemistry and Biology to pass the examination. This course has proven results. We have helped students from around the world to achieve their ideal scores with our instructive, effective and intensive training course. The course is not only intended for students who already passed the entrance exam. It is also designed to cover main topics only briefly taught in the rigorous University course and therefore will help students in the first year of studies. Based on data gathered, students who took the preparation course achieved higher test scores than students who did not take the preparation course.
