2017 UK SOCIALEVENT

PORT OF DOVEROCTOBER 9TH AND 10TH

Thisyear’s Social Event will be held over two days and one night.

It will be held in Dover and we will be using the Dover Marina Hotel for most of the Event.

The Hotel is situated overlooking the beach within the harbour half way between the ports of Dover East and Dover West.

As you may know, Dover is the primary roro port in the UK and is the world's busiest passenger port, with 16 million travelers, 2.1 million lorries, 2.8 million cars and motorcycles and 86,000 coaches passing through it each year, with an annual turnover of £58.5 million a year.

A summary of our activities and costs per person appear below.

Monday 9thOct / 1400 / SOUTH FORELAND LT.HO.– Guided Tour / £4

A guided tour of this famous lighthouse guarding the notorious Goodwin Sands which was first constructed in 1793, and in 1859 was the first lighthouse to use an electric light.

It was used by Marconi and was the site of the first shore to ship transmissions (to the East Goodwin lightship) and in 1899 the first international transmission was made to Wimereux on the French coast.

This is a three course dinner. The price includes port, coffee/tea and gratuity

Starters:

  1. Garden pea and mint soup with herb croutons (V)
  2. Smoked salmon roulade, horseradish cream, salad leaves, lime dressing
  3. Chicken liver parfait, toast and caramelized onion chutney

Main courses:

  1. Chargrilled chicken breast, asparagus and mushroom sauce, sautéed potatoes, seasonal vegetables
  2. Rich beef bourguignon, dauphinoise potatoes and green beans
  3. Salmon fillet, white wine & dill sauce, new potatoes, fresh vegetables
  4. Spinach and ricotta cannelloni with tomato and basil salad (V)

Desserts:

  1. Sticky toffee pudding with crème anglaise
  2. Raspberry trifle
  3. Belgian chocolate torte, light tuille biscuit and double cream

Guest of Honour

I am pleased to say that DOUG BARROW will be our guest of honour.Doug left the School of Navigation in 1969,joiningCunard-Brocklebankand leaving after seven years as 2nd Mate. He then spent about 30 years in the marine fuel industry working in the UK, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. He ran his own consultancy company, was a founder chairman of the International Bunker Industry Association and has held many prestigious positions in the City of London.

He has now been appointed by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency as the Director of the UK Ship Register (UKSR),and this appointment is part of a wider commitment to generate growth in the maritime sector, encourage greater investment in the UK and promote the UK flag as a world-class register that attracts quality shipowners.

Tuesday10thOct / 1000 / Visit the Dover Castle and the tunnels in the white cliffs. / NoCost

A guided tour of this medievalcastle founded in the 11thcentury and described as the Key to England.

Also a guided tour of the secret wartime tunnels beneath the castle within the white cliffs where a military command center and hospital were built during WW2..

Tuesday 10th Oct / 1400 / Visit Dover Coastguard station.
MAXIMUM OF 12 PEOPLE / NoCost

A guided tour of the coastguard control centre which monitors all marine traffic passing through the Dover Straits

As there is a limit of 12 on this tour so there will be a raffle for these places during the Dinner on Monday evening.

Tuesday 10th Oct / 1355 / Round trip to Calais on a P&O Ferry – includes a bridge visit / £13.50

A round trip to Calais on one of the latest P&O Ferries “The Spirit of France” which came into service in 2012.

It’s about 49,000 tons and can carry 2,000 passengers, 180 freight vehicles or 1,060 cars and has a maximum speed of 25 knots.

This will not be a group event however for those wishing to take the trip it is anticipated that a bridge visit can be arranged.

At the moment the fare is £13.50pp but very often P&O launch special offers so this price might be reduced.

Please remember to bring passports if you wish to make the trip.

Monday 9th Oct / We will be using the Dover Marina Hotel and Spa which is a Best Western Hotel and is situated on Waterloo Crescent on the waterfront overlooking the Port of Dover.
There is free parking behind the hotel.
Arrangements: / The B&B room rates will be £89.00 per night based on two people sharing a twin or double room. These special rates will be held up to 9th September so please book before then.
THERE ARE A LIMITED NUMBER OF ROOMS (30) AT THESE RATES SO I WOULD RECOMMEND YOU MAKE YOUR RESERVATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
If you wish for a room with a sea view there is a £15 supplement. If you require such a room please inform the hotel when you book.
