Fall 2017 CONFERENCE

Spokane, WA

October 19, 2017

Business Meeting Minutes

  • Call to Order – 12:58pm
  • Welcome and Introduction of board and new members/ 1st time attendees
  • President’s Report – WAPED is working on organization, responsibilities of board members, mission statement.
  • Treasurer’s Report – Reviewed revenue and expenses so far this year. Board is meeting via Zoom monthly to touch base more regularly with less expense (no flights for board members).

Old Business

  • Approval of Minutes from Spring 2017 Business Meeting – Aimee Elber motions to approve, Hope Stout seconds. Approved.
  • Spring Conference locations – scheduled to have Spring conference at the Enzian 2018 and 2019.

New Business

  • Board opening announcements – Hope Stout is recruiting for upcoming board positions, Treasurer, 4 year rep, 2 year rep, and incoming President.
  • Mission statement vote–offering discussion of proposed mission statement. Today we will either vote on the statement or postpone the vote if the membership would like to wait to incorporate more feedback. Suggestions: Add the word “equity” after inclusion. Propose to strike the words “students with disabilities” in part of the statement as it is redundant. What are the rules about voting on a non-constitutional item?

Do we really want to change the Purpose section of the Constitution to put the mission statement in place of what is currently there, or just create a mission statement?

Motion by Hope Stout to use ballot as a form to take comment from membership, seconded, motion passed. Comments will be solicited and posted to the list serv.

  • Olympia updates – Bree Callahan reports out on transfer task force. Report will be submitted to Olympia this December, hopefully with action items. There is a checklist, best practices for transfer, and a common release form.
  • Adhoc committee on accommodation determination – Jon McGough would like to create this committee to create a report about the accommodation determination process. This is in reaction to the fact that Olympia is looking at legislating how we transfer accommodation determination from one school to another and telling us how to do that. This committee will look at documentation standards and best practices for determining accommodations and gather resources, looking at the types of programs students are enrolled in.

Good of the Order -

  • Karen Fusco suggested we have a directory like Ben Webinger used to make. It is a monumental task. Members suggest that we keep our information up to date on the WAPED website and make sure our office contact information is easily findable on our websites.
