WALK IN MY SHOES(this is from an article on the web

A student finished her first year of college and is ready to head home to enjoy her summer when she is notified that she would need to take a Math Placement test to determine readiness before she could sign up for a required Algebra class in the fall. She didn’t have a place to stay since her dorm lease was up and the apartment she had leased with three of her friends would not be available until August. The placement test needed to be done quickly and in person as online was not allowed.

She went to the website for Math Placement testing and signed up; however as soon as she clicked Submit, a response popped up “The data you submitted is wrong. Resubmit” She resubmitted same response popped up.

She emailed the site to see what was wrong with her data and received a communication that said someone would respond in one to two days. Now she was freaking out because only a certain number of people could be confirmed to take the test on this day and time and she already had booked her flight home. This also meant added expense for living arrangements for an extended stay.

She tried calling the Math Placement Department but the voice mail stated that they only responded to emails no calls accepted. She had to drive to the school in search of someone to talk to in person but when she arrived at the department the person in charge of testing was at lunch and no one else had access to the information she submitted so she waited.

When the person in charge returned the student explained the situation and all that occurred. She was informed that there was a problem with the system at the time of her submittal but it had been resolved, but her data was not received and now there was no availability for the time she wanted to be tested. She was given a list for the next dates and times in the future.

If you look through the lens of the student you can see her frustration. This was not a good way to end the year or for the school to show that they really cared about supporting and helping her to be successful. She was not offered help or advice on other alternatives or remedies.

What started out as a positive first year experience whittled away at her spirit and emotional love she felt for the school at the beginning of the year.

What do you think she talked about all summer, her excitement of her first year in school or her frustration at the end?
