Core Training Programme Director
Role Description
Position to be appointed via a structured interview conducted by the Head of Schooland Postgraduate Dean (or their representative).
Term of Office
3 years, in the first instance, subject to satisfactory annual appraisal, and agreement of the Head of School and Postgraduate Dean.
Conditions of Service
Currently the Postgraduate Deanery will provide remuneration for 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) session.
In addition, the Head of School will give strong support in negotiations with the Programme Director’s employing Health Board to provide provision for increased Professional Leave allowance to ensure their availability to meet the demands of the role.
Responsibilities
All Training Programme Directors are responsible to the Head of the School and Postgraduate Dean. He/she will liaise with the Postgraduate Dean, Head of School and Royal College of Anaesthetists. It is essential that they recognise their statutory responsibilities as defined in the Guide to Postgraduate Specialty Training in the UK. (The“Gold Guide”).

They should demonstrate an ongoing commitment to postgraduate training in Anaesthesiaand have appropriate training according to the General Medical Council (GMC) generic standards for training. They should have been in a consultant post for a minimum of two years and should also be able to demonstrate evidence of their own Continuing Professional Development.
All Programme Directors will undergo an annual appraisal to be conducted by the Postgraduate Dean, Head of School, or their representative.
Duties
- To report to the School Board/STC and coordinate all aspects of training at Core Training Level.
- To oversee and ensure delivery of training appropriate to the training scheme that the trainee is appointed to.
- To develop and deliver the Speciality Education Programme in accordance with the RCoA curriculum or equivalent, and their role as Programme Director.
- To attend all meetings (or ensure attendance of an appropriate deputy) as required and actively contribute to the anaesthesia training agenda, including ACCS.
- To facilitate the process for entry into Core (inc ACCS) Training, both at annual recruitment and at any other recruitment required to maintain training posts in the programme. Liaise with the Specialty Training Office (PSCTS) to ensure the above and that training programmes are up to date and trainee posts rotate appropriately.
- To liaise with relevant parties to ensure optimal training opportunities are available.
- To ensure close supervision of trainees on the rotation including attention to any matters of clinical and professional competence that may arise. The provision of career and professional advice to Trainees in conjunction with School Careers Lead and Deanery staff where necessary as part of this process. Liaison with key School and Deanery staff in the management of doctors in difficulty. The roles and responsibilities in this regard are clearly set down in the “Gold Guide”.
- In liaison with the PSCTS, to co-ordinate, organise and lead on the ARCP process for all core trainees within the Specialty, including revalidation issues and follow-up process.
- Inconjunction with PSCTS, management of the e-portfolio system for core trainees.
- Management of out of programme experience, e.g. gap years, career breaks, in accordance with Deanery and GMC requirements.
- To encourage and lead on the further development of Anaesthesia Training within Wales.
- To undertake quality visits to training departments with core trainees.
- To maintain close liaison with other Specialty Programme Directors, especially where rotation design may impinge on their specialty.
- Attend Training Update meetings with the Deanery.
- Attend Training Update meetings with the RCoA.
- Maintaining the National CT1 Question Bank on behalf of the RCoA.
- To have undergone or undertake Equality and Diversity training
- All Programme Directors accept that the responsibilities of the role will require a flexible working pattern.
