Spring 2015NEWSLETTER

The Mikado

Plenty of positive feedback has been received for our March production of The Mikado. A sample of the feedback is below.

‘I just wanted to say a big thank you for an excellent evening's entertainment and reception. Carol and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance but had to restrain ourselves from singing along. I hope the rest of the week goes well for you. It certainly received well deserved applause.’ – Stephanie Roe, President, Batley G&S

“We thought The Mikado was brilliant last Saturday. Very enjoyable and very professional.Visually great too.” – Friends of Kath and Ernie who have never seen a G&S opera before.

‘Yes we really enjoyed The Mikado it was a smashing show even if somewhat long winded.’– Brian Eyley, Intake MMS.

It seemed that the only negative feedback was the length of the show. This was somewhat out of our control, but I am sure that the positive feedback far outweighed this!

Well done to everybody involved in the production – it was a cracking show!

Concerts

The Society is taking part in a joint concert with Featherstone Male Voice Choir on Saturday 27th June at Featherstone Methodist Church.

The concert for the Hospice support Group for Calder Grove has not materialised for July as the dates that the Society suggested did not fit in with their programme of events, so this will hopefully be organised for later in the year. Watch this space!

AGM

This is to be on Tuesday 28th July at Sandal Methodist Church at 7.30pm. Details will be circulated nearer the time.

Social Events

A sewing night will be held on Tuesday 26th May at Jane and Gordon’s house to sew labels in to the Pirates costumes and then these can be logged and numbered. Get those needles ready! There will be some light refreshments and some wine available!

The Society has been offered a discount on tickets for Cox and Box and Mrs Bouncer’s Legacy at Wakefield Theatre Royal. The tickets are being offered at £10 in the stalls. The committee decided that rather than organise a date for all to go, members should be informed of the details, but if anyone wanted to attend the 4 o’clock performance on Saturday 20th June, then members could inform the Secretary and this will be organised. If you want to add your name to the list, please contact the Secretary. In order to get the discount members will need to quote Wakefield G&S Society over the phone or use the following code online: WGS10ST.

There is to be a Barbecue at Helen and Peter’s house on Saturday 4th July; please put this date in your diary. There will be more details to come.

Show 2016

The committee have suggested that the Society perform ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’. The dates have been confirmed at St Austin’s Theatre from 16th to 19th March 2016. This is the week before Easter.

Costume Hire

So far this year, the Society has raised just over £850 – this is not as much as recent years, but is still a good money-spinner. A hire that is in the pipeline is to St David’s Players, Exeter, who have enquired about Pirates costumes for the whole show. They hired our fans about 3 years ago, so it is good that they have thought about using us again – we must be doing something right!

The Society has raised £75.14 since starting using this in March 2012– it is such an easy way of raising extra funds for the society.

The society has 12 members - well done to all who have signed up and to those who are not sure, please ask about it and see how easy it is!
