WAIS INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE SUPPORT PROGRAM SELECTION PROCESS

1.0 Eligibility

For an athlete to be eligible for an IASP Scholarship they must meet the standards outlined in the WAIS Athlete Categorisation and Selection Policy.

Only athletes from sports recognized by the Australian Sports Commission will be eligible.

1.2 Criteria:

The following selection guidelines will be used to assess each application. Please note that the performance criteria outlined below should not be viewed in isolation, as ALL selection guidelines will be taken into account.

1.  Athlete performance will be assessed from the relevant targeted event over the past 12 months. Targeted events may include:

·  Olympic Games

·  World Championships

·  Commonwealth Games

·  Sports specific targeted event recognised by the ASC

2. Other important criteria against which an application will be assessed include:

·  The assessment of the relevant National Sporting Organisation (NSO) as to the performance level, national ranking and international ranking of the athlete and/or the prospect of selection to a national team within 1-3 years.

·  An assessment of how well the athlete has and will evidence the WAIS values of People and Excellence in their pursuit of high performance outcomes.

·  The number of competitors and countries competing in the sport at an international level.

1.3 Special Circumstances

The Selection Panel may consider:

·  An athlete for a WAIS Scholarship or support if he/she were unable to compete at the selection event due to illness or injury.

·  Athletes who are relocating from interstate SIS/SAS programs

2.0 Application Process for Athletes in non WAIS Program Sports*

2.1 New IASP Scholarship Application process

·  WAIS will advise all sports aligned to WAIS athlete performance goals of the WAIS Individual Scholarship Application Form being available on the WAIS Website.

·  Athletes complete and submit the application form by the due date however WAIS will accept applications on an ongoing basis

·  The application must be endorsed by the relevant National Sporting Organisation and the athlete should be a member of the relevant State Sporting Organisation

2.2 Renewing IASP Scholarship Application Process

2.2.1 Currently on the Senior National Team

·  Athletes will be considered for an IASP scholarship and do not need to complete the application process

2.2.2 Currently not on the Senior National Team

·  Athletes will be advised to complete and submit the application form

3.0 Application Assessment Process

·  The selection Panel will consist of the WAIS Performance Team Directors

·  The selection panel will review eligible athletes against the criteria.

·  The Selection Panel will consider all NSO endorsed applications to form a list of IASP Prospective candidates. Podium Class, Potential Podium Class and International Class Athletes will be considered initially. The number of Developing International athletes selected will depend on the capacity of the Performance Enhancement Team to service the athletes as determined by the Performance Team Directors and aligned with AWE

4.0 Assessment Outcome Confirmation Process

·  The prospective athletes will be notified via mail/email or sms

·  The prospective athletes will make contact with the Performance Team Director allocated to their sport to form an Athlete Performance Enhancement Plan (APEP) including the allocation of resources.

·  The PTDs will make recommendations on scholarships for approval by the WAIS Executive Director on behalf of the WAIS Board.

5.0 Queries on Selection

Any questions concerning any aspect of selection must be in writing and addressed to the relevant WAIS Performance Team Director – within 14 days following notification

6.0 Appeal Process

If an athlete wishes to lodge an appeal about the selection process, this appeal is to be submitted in writing to the Performance Team Director. Appeals are to be reviewed by the Selection Panel who will investigate the selection process and substantiate the outcome. The athlete is to be advised of the outcome of the appeal in writing

In the event that the athlete is unsatisfied with the outcome of an appeal, the appeal can be escalated by the athlete to the Executive Director, in writing.

*Athletes in WAIS Program Sports who are not regularly in the WAIS DTE are eligible to be nominated for an IASP Scholarship through the Sport Program Selection Criteria and Process relative to their sport
