Crouse Hospital Offers Innovative Career Explorations for Students

A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Each year Crouse Hospital offers a series of monthly programs about a variety health care careers. The programs this year will begin Tuesday evening, October 18.

We will meet once a month, usually on a Tuesday night, from October through April weather permitting. Each program will run from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and consist of a presentation by a medical professional followed by a question and answer period.

Students, aged 14 and older, are invited to register. The cost for the entire series is $30.00 and that money will be used to fund the hospital’s junior volunteer scholarship program. This year we were able to award five $1000.00 scholarships.

We meet in the Marley Education Center, 765 Irving Avenue, located on the corner of Waverly and Irving Avenues. Parking is free in the Crouse Hospital garage located on the corner of Adams Street and Irving Avenue. Bring your parking ticket with you for validation.

Students who attend a minimum of 5 of the 7 programs will be given priority for volunteering in the summer of 2017.

If you are considering a career in medicine, this program is for you!

Dear Student,

Every summer, Crouse Hospital sponsors a volunteer program for high school students. Positions in this program are highly sought and each year we put about 120 students to work in nearly every area of the hospital.

The program is for students who will reach their 15th birthday by June 1 of the year they intend to volunteer and requires a minimum of 60 volunteer hours over a minimum of six weeks of the summer. Most volunteers do many more hours and more weeks.

Because of the popularity of the program, it has been necessary to develop a priority system.

1.  The first students considered will be those who have volunteered and wish to return.

2.  The second students considered will be those who were unable to volunteer last summer but were guaranteed a spot this year.

3.  The third students considered will be those who have attended at least five CHOICES sessions this year.

4.  Fourth, students who have relatives working at Crouse Hospital.

5.  All others

Applications for positions in this program will be disseminated by email in December of 2015 with a deadline of March 1, 2016. Applications will be considered in each category in a first come, first served order.

I look forward to hearing from you in 2016.

Sincerely yours,

DICK SCOTT

2015 JVP SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS.

JIAHUI LIAO – Jiahui graduated from FM High School where she compiled an outstanding academic and extracurricular record. Each year she was here, Jiahui contributed over 100 hours. Jiahui is looking forward to her freshman year at Duke University.

HANNAH NARBURGH – Hannah graduated from CNS High School where in addition to an outstanding academic record she was captain of her varsity volleyball team. Hannah will be attending the University of Maryland in pursuit of her goal as a doctor.

EMILY O’CONNOR – Emily graduated first in her class at JD High School. Despite the heavy workload Emily found time to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities and can be found working at Carvel’s in DeWitt. Emily will be a student at Skidmore College this fall.

LEEANN PHELPS – LeeAnn also graduated from CNS High School where she compiled an outstanding academic record. She has been our “first friendly face” as an ambassador at the front desk on Fridays for the past three years. Next year LeeAnn will be attending Hobart/William Smith.

AISHWARYA SURESH – Aishwarya graduated from Liverpool High School where she was an AP Scholar with honors. You can meet her in the gift shop where she first volunteered and is now employed. September will find her a student at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

The volunteer department will be hosting a reception for invited guests to introduce our winners and their families. We would be honored if you were able to attend. The reception will be held Tuesday, August 18 in the Marley Education Center Atrium. We will be serving a fruit and cheese tray, cake, coffee and beverages.

We hope you will be able to meet and congratulate our wonderful volunteers and their families on this special occasion.
