Volunteer role title:Shared Practice Volunteer Intern

Overall purpose of volunteer intern role:

As the Shared Practice Volunteer Intern, and with the support of the team, you will be responsible for coordinating a project that will:

  • Create a new guide that forms part of our ‘How to’ series
  • Identify the latest information, resources and examples of good practice to support creation of the guide
  • Disseminate the guide across the NHS, using Diabetes UK’s existing channels and creating new ones
  • Build on Diabetes UK’s knowledge of what is working well in diabetes care.

Timescales

To be beneficial to both the volunteer and Diabetes UK, this internship will last 16 weeks, volunteering a minimum of 2 or 3 days per week. Start date and volunteer hours are negotiable and can be agreed between the intern and manager.

About the Shared Practice Team

Diabetes UK is pioneering a new approach to spreading ideas in diabetes care and getting good practice into widespread use. Shared Practice is a dedicated team that aims to inspire change across the NHS by providing healthcare professionals and commissioners with the essential information and support they need to drive improvement in diabetes care. A key role of the Shared Practice team is to create a collection of easily accessible, practical resources to help those who want to improve diabetes care.

Main elements of the volunteer intern role:

  • Complete some scoping work with Regional Offices and Healthcare Professional Engagement team around what would be a useful and practical topic for the guide to cover.
  • Develop and write the guide by working with team leads and reviewing current literature and resources on the agreed topic.
  • Liaise with relevant people to test and refine the guidecontent.
  • Identify creative ways to present the information and working with the Creative team to create the final branded guide.
  • Identify suitable methods to disseminate the guide to internal and external audiences, including opportunities to share the guide on an ongoing basis with new audiences, such as induction days.
  • Ensure a suitable system is in place to record feedback about the guide.
  • Attend and participatein team meetings and contribute to any other areas of work across the team where appropriate.

The skills you need:

  • A passion for improving healthcare
  • Experience of working or volunteering in a charity or healthcare setting
  • Creativity and a willingness to confidently put forward new ideas
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in engaging and networking with different audiences
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to the role for the duration of the internship.

We provide interns with a unique insight into the daily workings of a top UK charity and the opportunity to deliver a short-term project that will make a valuable contribution to the work of Diabetes UK.

Internships normally last between two and four months and are based at our head office in London.

Intellectual Property

The volunteering you do for Diabetes UK is important to us and we value the rights that may exist in any work which you undertake. In some cases, it may be vital that we own and can prove we own such rights. Accordingly, we may ask you to complete, sign and return a separate assignment of such rights.

This is an unpaid voluntary internship. The purpose of this role description is to set out the expectations of both parties. It is not the intention of either party that the volunteering has the purpose or effect of creating a legally binding contract or an employment relationship between parties.
