Volunteer Recruitment Intern

An exciting opportunity to intern part time for two months with national youth organisation, Youth at Risk, on a community programme in Newhaven, working in partnership with Newhaven Foyer.

The Organisation

Since 1992, Youth at Risk, a national charity, has been delivering intensive, transformational, personal development programmes in areas of deprivation across the UK. We work in partnership with local people and communities to transform their most disruptive and excluded young people. We call it Tough Love: clear rules, strict discipline – but absolute compassion.

We believe that if you stop thinking about young people as problems to be ‘fixed’, (unemployed, drug user, teenage mum, criminal) but support them instead to realise their strengths and talents, and raise aspirations, all young people can achieve their potential.

The Position

We have secured funding to deliver Ignition Newhavenin partnership with Newhaven Foyer. The programme will work with young people in the local community who are experiencing homelessness and disadvantage, with lives that are challenging and often lacking stability.

The programme aims to;(i) challenge and confront their attitudes and beliefs about themselves; (ii) raise aspirations and motivation, creating a ‘can do’ outlook and establishing personal responsibility, both for the present and future of their lives; and (iii) establish key goals and create in them the confidence and self-esteem to work towards them.

A crucial part of the success of the programme is the use of local volunteers to coach and support young people every step of the way. We offer volunteers free personal development training in our coaching methodology and support throughout the duration of the programme.

We are looking for aVolunteer Recruitment Intern to work alongside Youth at Risk’s Project Managers, raising local awareness of the programme and recruiting local members of the community to take up volunteer roles. You would be working from home but expected to spend a significant amount of working hours in the local community; therefore it is essential that you live either in or nearby Newhaven and are happy to travel to surrounding areas.

This is a two month unpaid internship. The successful intern must be available to start by 8th December and work a minimum of 10hours per week until mid-February2015. Reasonable travel expenses and other expenses incurred during the internship will be covered by Youth at Risk subject to prior agreement by the Project Manager.

  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Local knowledge of Newhaven and the surrounding area would be required
  • Previous experience of working with volunteers and/or recruitment would be desirable
  • Some experience working with small charities and community groups would be preferred

Person Specification

  • Excellent people and relationship building skills, including the ability to develop new relationships quickly and enrol people into volunteering in the programme.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic and able to hit the ground running is essential. Although direction and support will be in place, strong initiative is required and the ability to generate own ideas.
  • Excellent communication skills, be it by telephone, face to face, or via email.
  • A genuine desire to make a difference and a positive impact in local communities
