VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:Storytelling Volunteer

Why do we need you?

At WWT, we shape unforgettable experiences. We believe the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is to experience them, so we bring awe-inspiring nature up close and let it do the talking. In this role you will be engaging our visitors, both young and old, during our seasonal events throughout the year to include Easter, Halloween and Christmas. You may also be called upon for some weekend storytelling sessions.

How much time will it take?We are seeking volunteers for school holidaysandfor some weekends. We hope you’ll be able to offer around 3-6 hours per day depending on the storytelling sessions advertised. Your availability will be discussed prior to offering you the position.

What will you be doing?

•Delivering storytelling sessions to young children and families using entertaining stories relative to the season or subject matter.

•Bringing the stories to life through the use of different voices, costumes, props and pictures, where appropriate.

  • Preparing in advance by helping to source and adapt stories and equipmentto be used in the delivery of the sessions.
  • Where possible, weaving in WWT’s key wetland conservation messages in a way that is appropriate to your audience.

Who are we looking for?

This role will suit you if you:

•Are outgoing and friendly

•Have some relevant experience of working with children and performance, or demonstrable skills in these areas

•Are able to work independently and proactively

•Can manage an audience and capture the attention of families and children in an outdoor setting.

General notes:

This role will take place predominantly during public holidays and some weekends. The exact hours you are able to contribute will be discussed prior to placement.

In order for you – and us – to reap the most benefit from your contribution, we would hope that you could offer a minimum of a calendar years commitment to cover the seasonal events.

You must be able to get yourself to and from the centre as it is not on a local bus route.We regret that we are not in a position to reimburse expenses incurred for travel to the site. Any pre-agreed out-of-pocket expenses incurred in the course of the role will be reimbursed.

This position is entirely voluntary and is therefore unpaid. Any offer of a volunteer placement is not intended to create a legally binding contract between us and any agreement may be cancelled at any time at the discretion of either party. Neither of us intends any employment relationship to be created either now or at any time in the future.
