Background

Our Bike Back project at Bristol Prison, Horfield, takes in donated bikes which are then stripped and fully refurbished by inmates in their own workshop situated within the prison. Once refurbished, these bikes have to be thoroughly checked for roadworthiness and safety prior to their sale to the public. These pre-sale checks are carried out in a workshop situated just outside the prison.

Volunteer opportunity

The Bike Back project is looking for volunteers to work in this workshop, to help our existing mechanics carry out a range of essential safety checks – and remedial repairs where necessary - on bikes prior to their sale.

We would ideally like to recruit volunteers to join our small and friendly team, who have a good existing knowledge of bicycle maintenance and repair, but we can offer training in areas of bicycle mechanics as required. (We can also offer copious amounts of tea and biscuits!). We would be very happy if a volunteer showed an interest in helping and training other volunteers in the workshop, although this is not mandatory!

Some examples of the type of work that needs to be done on a bike could be:

·  Checking and adjusting wheel bearing cones

·  Checking and adjusting headsets

·  Adjusting cup and cone bottom brackets

·  Setting up indexed, non indexed and hub gears

·  Setting up different kinds of brakes –e.g. cantilever, v brake, calliper, disc

·  Truing up wheels

We have opportunities for volunteers to work in our workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays - and would like a volunteer to be able to commit one morning a week on a Tuesday or Thursday, for a period of at least three months.
