Our work is varied supporting the third sector, and working with our partners including Scottish Government, South Lanarkshire Council, NHS Lanarkshire, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

Job Purpose:

To work as a member of a Development Team in a strategic, methodical and consistent manner in the delivery of wide ranging support and development services to the South Lanarkshire Voluntary Sector. The post holder will develop higher level relationships with third sector organisations and community groups to address, improve and consolidate capacity building measures that promotes the development of volunteering and enriches the quality of the experience overall.

The post holder will undertake duties supporting aspects of organisation training, financial awareness, funding development,and governance,sustaining the provision of generic capacity building of organisations to ensure best practise with a focus on volunteering development.

The post holder also holds a key role in monitoring progress, and maintaining development timetables aligned to the Work Plan;reporting performance through local and national performance measures and outcomesfacilitated by in-house client database - MILO and InfoBase.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Contribute to the achievement of Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire’s overall organisational objectives and targets. With particular responsibility to support third sector organisations and promote volunteering.
  1. Work as a member of a small team to undertake a programme of support activities for third sector organisations. These organisations can range from large established charities to small volunteer only groups.
  1. Identify and analyse the key issues affecting individual organisations and communities and work with relevant organisations to create an appropriate support plan which addresses the issues.
  1. Organise and participate in the delivery of a programme of organisation support and/or training appropriate to organisations including sign posting to other services.
  1. Provide information, advice and support to third sector organisations and TSI staff on volunteering development, focusing on increasing the number of ‘Volunteer Friendly’ organisations, work with secondary schools and organisations to continue to embed Saltire Awards, and support the development of Volunteering Awards.
  1. Represent VASLan at business meetings, seminars and conferences relevant to the Third Sector.
  1. Prepare regular reports and statistics on activities for the Management Team and Board of Directors.
  1. Any other tasks as may be required which are consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the post.

Training Delivery

  • To identify training needs and source and / or deliver training as required.

Communication

  • To take personal and shared responsibility in communicating internally (with colleagues) and externally (with voluntary organisations and partners of VASLan).
  • To inform the Team Leader of emerging and ongoing issues affecting the Third Sector and Social Enterprises.

Performance

  • To develop and regularly review in partnership with the Team Leader and colleagues, a personal work-plan.

Person Specification: Development Officer

Essential / Desirable
Qualification / Project Management through practical hands on delivery as Project Manager/Co-ordinator/Officerworking in the voluntary sector
Full understanding and application of organisational Health Checks and/or Business Reviews / Degree or similar qualification in community development or related
Business related certification
Experience / Experience of working within the voluntary sector
Experience of field level engagement work with voluntary groups or local communities and volunteers
Experience of delivering a range of support
Experience of identifying training needs and/or delivering training
Experience of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint / Project Management experience
Working knowledge of MILO, InfoBase
Knowledge / Knowledge of the third sector
Knowledge of collaborative working with volunteers, community groups and management groups.
Knowledge of community capacity building
Knowledge of volunteering development and volunteer recognition / Understanding of Third Sector Interface development
Skills and Abilities / Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation and reporting skills (written and oral)
Ability to work on own initiative and prioritise workload

Access to a car to travel independently within the service area
