Workplace Learning
Overview:
Workplace Learning (WPL) is a subject undertaken by year 11and 12 Vocational Education and Training (VET) students to develop skills in the workplace. Students also attain credit towards secondary graduation for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). WACE points will be awarded based on the number of hours (in multiples of 55) and completion of the necessary paperwork (see requirements below). Students attend their nominated workplace in accordance with their industry area (e.g. one day a week, two days a week, week blocks). This subject is designed to enhance future employment and training opportunities. Please NOTE: It is compulsory to attend WPL all year, regardless of the number of hours completed. Failure to do so can result in a student losing their place in their respective VET Program.
Requirements:
To pass thesubject, students must have:
- the required hours;
- a Task Scheduleincluding a reflection of each day/week’s performance; and
- aSkills Journal, completed at school.
Work Readiness:
Students will not be permitted to contact employers or to pursue a WPL placement until the school has established they are work ready. To do this, they need to meet the following criteria:
Behaviour: Each student is a representative of the school whilst on work placement. It is expected that they represent their school to the best of their ability and in accordance with both the employer’s and school’s expected standards of behaviour.
Personal Presentation: Each student needs to be well groomed, have an appropriate standard of personal hygiene and maintain a standard of dress appropriate to the work placement. This may involve wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or workplace uniform.
Attendance: Each student must demonstrate they are reliable in terms of attendance and punctuality and, through application to their studies, show they have a commitment to self-improvement and the acquisition of skills.
Application and Interview: Each VET program has requirements regarding the application and interview process which enable students to demonstrate their level of work readiness. If the employer and the school accept a student’s performance in the application and interview process, that student will then be offered a placement. Each student will be required to remain at school until they can meet the required standard.
Responsibilities:
STUDENTS

Students are expected to attend work regularly. If for some reason students are not able to attend, they must inform (giving as much notice as possible – minimum of 1 hour) their:
- Workplace Supervisor/ Employer; and
- WPL Teacher/School.
Students who do not show this basic courtesy will receive one warning and be placed on a period of probation to monitor their progress in the workplace.
Important Note: An employer is quite within their rights to “dismiss” a student for poor attendance or performance.
It is unacceptable to arrange appointments that are not of an urgent medical nature when a student is expected at work placement, for example: driving lessons, hair/beauty etc.
It is unacceptable for students to come to school instead of WPL. All students must attend their WPL every allocated day unless they are sick or there are other acceptable reasons. “Catching up on school or TAFE work” is NOT an acceptable reason.
Students who break workplace learning rules will:
- Be warned on first occurrence
- Receive an After School Detention (ASD) from the VET Coordinator on further occurrences
- Be at risk of losing their WPL placement and VET program position

ReflectionToday was my first day at work placement. The staff were very welcoming to me, showing me around the workplace and helping me whenever I did not know how to do something. I learnt to answer the business phone in the correct manner, as well as record messages. I was quite nervous at first, but developed my confidence as the day progressed. Next week I hope to do some computer work, perhaps typing up some letters.
