Week 6

ASL 2 – ABC Book

Independent Study

VOCAB: Review vocab pages 71-75

GRAMMAR:

Object+Subject+Verb Sentence Order: Last week we discussed the use of topic markers when the time indicator is used at the beginning of the sentence. When you use the O+S+V sentence order you also use the topic marker. It is represented by __t__ and the nonmanual markers are raised eyebrows and a short pause. The object of the sentence is what is receiving the action. For example.

She likes black coffee. The object answer the question WHAT. She likes what? Black coffee is the object. This sentence in ASL would look like:

______T______t______

COFFEE BLACK SHE LIKES. Or BLACK COFFEE SHE LIKES.

Practice: Translate the following English sentences into ASL using O+S+V sentence order, then practice signing them. Don’t forget the NMM.

1.  I prefer tea.

2.  I hate coffee.

3.  I like work.

4.  I enjoy television

5.  I don’t like coke.

6.  I don’t like meat.

7.  I not drink coffee.

DIRECTIONAL AND NON-DIRECTIONAL VERBS: Some verbs indicate direction between the subject or object of the sentence. These verbs are called directional verbs; some examples are: SHOW, ASK, TELL, LOOK-AT, HELP, SEND, GIVE, PAY.

For the sentence: You are giving me money. The verb GIVE moves from the other person toward yourself. This indicates that money is coming towards you. The sentence: I am asking you a question. The verb ASK moves from you out to answer person. When directional verbs are used the pronoun usually is NOT signed – unless you want to emphasize the point.

Other verbs such as: KNOW, HAVE, WANT, NEED are not directional.

CLASSIFIERS USED AS VERBS: Some classifiers can function as a verb. CL:C and CL:Ch are used for the verb GIVE for objects that “fit” that shape. CL:C is used for small container like objects. CL:Ch is used for objects held in the hand such as a book, small box.

Translate the following sentences into ASL. Use the grammar rules that apply. Remember your non-manual markers.

1.  Tomorrow I will give her an umbrella.

2.  Tomorrow she will give me an umbrella.

3.  I told her to stay yesterday.

4.  I will help him buy clothes tomorrow.

5.  I already asked him to wait.

6.  I will show her the movie later.

7.  She will send me the money tomorrow.

8.  Will you ask him to work?

9.  Can you help him make bread today?

10.  Show him your new watch now.

Additional Practice sentences: Pages 29 -32 in your workbook. Partner up and sign these practice sentences. One person sign, the other voice the sentence in English. Redo until your partner gets the meaning correct. Remember your NMM.

Your story should include a location, a negative statement, and a 3rd person set up that you refer back to. Be sure you have 5 questions to go along with your story. I sent this to you via Email.
