Visualizing Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration- LETS MAP IT OUT!
Background Information:
Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is one of the most important biological events that occur on this planet. It is defined as the process by which plants use solar energy (absorbed by the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of leaves) to convert raw materials into food. The raw materials are carbon dioxide, which diffuses through small holes in the underside of the leaves called stomata, and water. The food creates is the sugar monomer glucose. As a by-product of photosynthesis oxygen gas is also produced. The general chemical equation for photosynthesis is
Chemical Symbols:
6H2O + 6 CO2 + solar energy ------ C6H12O6 + 6 O2
Molecular Structures:
+ C=O=C + SUN ------> + O=O
LIGHT
Cellular Respiration
Simply stated, respiration is the release of energy in the form of ATP from the energy-storing compound glucose. Essentially it is the reverse of photosynthesis, which the only difference being the form energy takes in the equation. It is represented by the chemical equation:
Chemical Symbols:
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 ------> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + 36 ATP
Molecular Structures:
+ O=O ------> C=O=C + +
Directions
1. Using colored pencils/crayons color or circle the chemicals in all four equations above. Use the following colors for each molecule(s)…
Water Blue
Carbon Dioxide Red
Glucose Green
Oxygen Orange
Sunlight/ ATP (Energy) Yellow
YOUR TASK:
You and a partner will work to create two drawings. One of the Mitochondria and one of the Chloroplast. You can work together on both or divide and conquer each completing one. Use your textbook to reference a drawing that includes the vocab below and identify the key components of each and explain what happens as energy is absorbed or converted.
Autotroph
Heterotroph
Aerobic respiration
lactic acid fermentation
ADP
Electron Transport Chain:you do not need to know the individual steps just reactants and products
light-dependent reaction
Alcoholic fermentation
Krebs Cycle (Citric Acid Cycle): you do not need to know the individual steps just reactants and products
light-independent reaction
Anaerobic respiration
NAD
ATP
NADH
Chlorophyll
Thykaloid
Chloroplast
Stroma
Glycolysis:you do not need to know the individual steps just reactants and products
Calvin Cycle

Drawings will be graded on inclusion of appropriate vocabulary with definitions and not artistic ability but the drawings should look like you took your time!
Post Drawing: Questions: Each person should do these questions individually! Attach these questions and the first page with the colors to your drawings with a paperclip to get full credit.
