On Mondays and Tuesdays our Caretaker carries out a wide range of activities including for example:

  • Weekly checks of external play areas, including litter pick and check of grounds
  • Weekly fire extinguisher and fire exit door checks
  • Any monthly or quarterly maintenance checks or tasks that are due such as cleaning the grills on our heating/cooling and ventilation systems
  • Portable Appliance testing of electrical equipment
  • Undertaking any basic repairs/remedial work needed such as replacing toilet flushers, sealing leaking pipework and clearing drains; repainting scuffed paintwork
  • Keeping on top of our gardening (not including grass cutting)
  • Building and installing new equipment/resources including noticeboards, cupboards
  • Sorting out recycling

We are looking for a friendly, practical and reliable person to volunteer with our Caretaker to support him with these tasks and learn about our building.

We ask that you are able to make a regular commitment (a minimum of 2 hours a week on Monday and/or Tuesdays between 8.30am and 2.30pm), and be prepared to have a DBS check undertaken (as you will be required to undertake tasks in our Nursery areas).

For the right person, this volunteering role could lead to up to 5 to 10 hours a week of paid employment as our Caretaker looks to reduce his hours as he is planning for his future retirement.

Role Description

Role Title: Vinery Centre Maintenance Volunteer

Reporting to:Centre Manager

Expenses:Travel costs and any additional expenses incurred will be reimbursed.

Commitment:Minimum of 2 hourson Mondays and/or Tuesdays to suit between 8.30am and 2.30pm

Location:The Vinery Centre, 20 Vinery Terrace, Leeds, LS9 9LU

Key tasks you would be helping with:

Maintenance and repair

  • Troubleshoot minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
  • Carry out preventive building maintenance tasks
  • Carry out routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, fixing water leaks
  • Carry out routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or lamps and assists in repairing light fixtures.
  • Assemble and move furniture, hang pictures and bulletin boards, install signs.
  • Install window blinds, fixtures, appliances and other necessary equipment.
  • Repair and replace door handles or locks, repair door closures, patch holes in walls.
  • Paint interior and exterior walls.

Health and Safety

  • Carry out regular tests to systems, appliances, equipment and furniture to ensure compliance with health and safety requirements eg. Fire alarm tests, PAT testing, legionella testing
  • Carry out inspections and keep logs and records as required.

Room Hire support

  • Move and set up furniture and equipment to make rooms ready for booked activities as required.

Cleaning

  • Work with colleagues to ensure that waste is managed effectively e.g. recycling separated from general waste, monitor waste collection services
  • To use cleaning materials and products as per COSHH and risk assessment guidelines.

General

  • Assist the wider Centre Support team to ensure the smooth running of the centre
  • Adhere to all Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Data Protection requirements including the requirement to wear personal protective clothing
  • Report any serious concerns immediately to the centre manager (or their deputy)

The work involves moderate to heavy work in all types of weather. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, and lift. Leeds Mencap will carry out risk assessments on an annual basis and may require volunteers to undergo reviews and medical checks to ensure they are able to carry out the tasks required with acceptable levels of risk to themselves and others.
