Saraland High School Swim Team Information

The 2013 Saraland Varsity Swim Team is open to all students entering grades 7th through 12th grades enrolled in Saraland City School System. Evaluations will be held on May 23 at 4:00 p.m. at the Saraland YMCA. Swimmers are expected to try out with freestyle and one other stroke (back, fly or breast stroke) Athletes must meet all proper state eligibility requirements regarding grades, attendance zones, updated physical and insurance form. Any student involved in evaluations MUST have an updated physical and a copy of their insurance card.

AHSAA ELIGIBILITY -

Student athletes are required to have the following to be eligibility to participate in an AHSAA sport.

  • 4 Core Subjects Plus 2 Electives must equal a 70 average
  • Must live in the District (Saraland) area or have attended the school for at least one year
  • Current approved physical
  • Insurance form

Swim Team Costs and Practice

Swimming is a very competitive and dedicated sport. In order to be competitive, we need dedicated students willing to commit to our team. Students will be expected to swim a minimum of three of the four practices a week during season to participate in the upcoming swim meets.

The SHS Swim Team will practice four days a week after school at the Saraland YMCA pool. A fee is required to pay for pool usage by each swimmer. Membership is not required. Students are required to wear proper competitive swimwear. www.swimandtri.com or and goggles. Students must bring proper hydration (water bottles) and a quick “refueling” snack before and after practice.

Costs: Pool Maintenance & Rental Fee $100 ($50 due before 1st practice/balance due by October 1st)

Team Uniform , Swim Cap & Warm Up $100 (payments made to Swim N Tri located on Airport Blvd.)

Total Costs$200

Fundraisers are required by each team member.

The following are some suggestive swim clubs that students can take advantage of:

  1. YMCA Summer Swim Team - North Mobile (Saraland YMCA) or Chandler Branch
  2. City of Mobile Swim Association CMSA
  3. Alpine Swim Club
  4. Woodlands Swim Club

Each swimmer should know all strokes involved in competitive swimming.

There are numerous private coaches available to teach proper stroke techniques. The high school swim season does not allow team to practice together throughout the summer. Team practices will be held from the first week in August to the last week in November to prepare for the High School State Swim Competition in Tuscaloosa, Alabama the first weekend in December. We are limited to compete in six swim meets for the season.

Important Dates to Remember:

May 20 – Parent Meeting, Fundraiser begins, etc.

Evaluations – May 23 at 4:00 p.m.

Month of July - Go to Swim N Tri to be fitted for Swim Suit. Pay Swim N Tri for Suit and order before the end of the month.

July 10th – Apparel Order form

August - First Official Practice Begins

Practices will be held from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday Swimmers are responsible for their own transportation. Students can ride a bus to the YMCA with your written permission to the YMCA on the regular bus route as long as there is room on the bus.

Fundraiser – Our first fundraiser for the Swim Team will be our team sponsorship shirt. We are asking that each swimmer try to collect at least five sponsorships. With you five sponsorships, the swimmer will receive one “free” t-shirt, AND a team sweatsuit. The deadline to turn in all money is on the Friday of the first week of practice.

Funds needed:

$20.00 fee should have been paid at sign ups. If you have not paid this, it is due IMMEDIATELY!

$35 to $40 plus tax for Men’s Swim Suit that is paid directly to Swim N Tri OR

$45 to $55 plus tax for Women’s Swim Suit that is paid directly to Swim N Tri

$50.00 (1/2 of pool fees) is due BEFORE August 6th practice

$50.00 (remaining balance of pool fees) is due by September 1st

Diving Coach

Students interested in participating on the Diving Team should get in contact with a Certified Dive Coach. A local coach that coaches divers at Port City Diving, Barb Parker, Ph. 251-454-9872,

Students do not typically compete with their school in diving in this area, but they have an opportunity to go straight to the state meet (as long as they are top four divers for the school) that is held in December.

Other opportunities are available in some local meets with Port City Diving.
