INEBI 6. UNIT 1 The Body Machine: Video h.0.7

Eyewitness DK DVD: Bodyzone

Some examples of activities:

Name

T stops the DVD and freezes the image in order to ask questions to SS.
What is this? What are those?… (pointing to parts of the body, organs…)

Catch

SS are requested to raise their hands when they recognise a given word. Examples:
Human body, machine, air, oxygen, lungs, eye, crying, muscles, brain…

Spot

SS are requested to raise their hands when they identify a given image. Examples:
A girl laughing; a baby crying; a person skipping on a rope; a woman playing the violin; a dentist; fishes; leeches…

Scan

SS are given a series of statements. They should check if they are right or wrong according to the DVD. Examples:
True or false:
  • The body has 405 bones.
  • Our bones are very strong.
  • Bones are symbols of life.
  • Skin renews itself constantly. Each person sheds about 20 kilos of skin in a life.
  • Skin senses touch, heat, cold and smell.

Predict

T freezes image before a particular piece of information is given. T asks SS to predict what could be coming.
Examples:
(Approx. min. 18) Christians consider heart a symbol of sorrow, joy, compassion, suffering… Aristotle placed intelligence on the heart… What is coming up?
(heart as symbol of love and passion)
Our blood is red, but what colour is the blood of some crustaceans? (blue) and some worms (green)

Recall

T freezes stops the DVD at the end of a chapter or scene and asks questions for the SS to recall words or images:
Some nuns appear in the video. What are they eating? (ice-creams)
We can see a playing card. Which one? (queen of hearts)

Order

SS have to spot and number a series of items that appear in the DVD.:
In this video they are going to tell us about the following things. What will be the order?
  • Digestive system, skin, respiratory system, skeleton, circulatory system, brain…

Dictation

T replays a short scene as many times as necessary so Ss can complete the gaps in a given texts. Example:
Listen and fill in the gaps:
Human beings have lived on earth for thousands of years. In that timethey’ve tried to understand their place in the world and what makes them human.
Through the centuries, we’ve learnt to build great machines to lift and bend, to forge and carry. All of these have been created by the most highly developed, efficient and superb machine of all: the human body.

  • LISTEN TO THE INTRODUCTION AND COMPLETE THE GAPS:

______beings have lived on earth for thousands of ______. In that ______they´ve tried to understand their place in the ______and what makes them ______.

Through the ______, we´ve learnt to build great ______to lift and bend, to forge and carry. All of these have been created by the most highly developed, ______and superb ______of all: the human ______.

ACTIVITY 2

  • Pay attention to the part in which the video talks about the respiratory system. Does the video mention any important organ? Which one?
  • Is this sentence true or false:

We breath 600,000,000 times in all life, enough to fill 40 hot air balloons.

ACTIVITY 3

Apart from the systems we also have 5 senses. In the dvd we’re going to listen about two of them: sight and hearing.

Complete the sentences and write S if the sentence is about the eyes and H if the sentence is about the ears.

1.- They’re the human camera and they are divided in three parts:

  • a ______outer covering: the ______
  • behind a lense to receive ______
  • at the ______a screen: the ______

2.- All sounds begin with ______

3.- The drum sends vibrations through the body´s tiniest bone, no bigger than a grain of ______and nerves send the signal to the ______that we recognize as ______

4.- There´s another effective cleaning process: ______

5.- Sound waves enter the ______and reach the all ______membrane, the eardrum.

6.- We divide tears into two groups: tears of ______and tears of ______

7.- They help us keep ______

ACTIVITY 4

  • We are going to listen about the skeletal system. Decide if the sentences are true or false.

1.- The body has 216 bones.

2.- More than a half of the bones are in the hands and feet.

3.- All are linked by joints and driven by bones to produce the perfect moving machines.

4.- Our bones are not strong.

5.- Teeth are the hardest part of the body.

6.- The powerful skeleton is only 1/3 of the body´s weight.

  • COMPLETE THE SENTENCES:

- JOINTS enable humans to ______, to ______, to twist and turn converting power and strengh into ______and precision.

- SKIN protects us from ______, ______and microscopic enemies.

- All the ______to drive the ______comes from ______, ______and ______

-Like a ______system nerve signals are ______.

-The body has around ______km of nerve cables carrying messages and coordinating everything it does.

-The entire body is controlled by a perfect control centre, the ______

-The brain has more cells than the number of ______in the ______rainforest and as many connections as there are leaves on those trees.

-The brain is only ______of the body weight and receives ______of the ______supply.

-One last question: Where do we show our feelings?
