New Deans were hired, students and faculty are outstanding, new facilities are being constructed and financial support is growing steadily. Research leadership and principal investigators have worked hard over the past 10 years to build a research support infrastructure that positions the university’s research portfolio for rapid growth.

The university has a genuine commitment to doing what it will take to further enhance every facet of the organization. . There were 20 new faculty hired in the 2012-13 academic year alone – most of them in research growth areas - and more hires are planned to complement the existing faculty.

This is a career defining opportunity for a candidate possessing the necessary academic and research credentials, managerial experience and behavioral competencies who has a strong desire for personal career growth and development. More specifically:

·  A strong academic record of scholarship qualified to join an appropriate academic department as a tenured professor;

·  A proven track record of attracting extramural research grants over a period of several years and delivering expected results on time and on budget;

·  A history of building and leading a successful research program with multiple principal investigators;

·  A talent and ability to match the research needs of a wide variety of government and private funding sources with interdepartmental teams of principal investigators and other institutions enthusiastic to tackle the project;

·  A solid understanding of what it really takes to build solid relationships with funding agencies like NSF, NIH, NIST, DOE, DARPA, NASA, AFOSR and others that will lead to repeat bidding opportunities through the development of trust and mutual respect;

·  Energy, persistence, intellectual curiosity and a proven managerial ability to drive the development of research activities and win the respect and trust of colleagues at all levels of the Institute;

·  A proven track record of attracting and supporting faculty who are centers of influence in their respective academic disciplines/fields of inquiry particularly in the fields of engineering and life sciences;

·  Experience with SBIR/STTR grants and in establishing industrial partnerships.

VPR Professional Qualifications:

·  PhD or equivalent terminal degree to qualify for senior faculty rank in an academic department.

·  10+ years of progressively more significant career accomplishments in an academic institution with a research focus.

·  Distinguished record of research accomplishments.

·  Managerial expertise in supervision, planning, compliance and financial reporting of research grants.

·  Proven track record attracting and executing sizable research grants and contracts.

·  Familiarity with tech transfer and commercialization of intellectual property developed by university principal investigators.

·  Advocate for women and historically underrepresented groups in science and engineering to further advance their research initiatives and academic careers.
