Kentucky Center for Economic Policy Seeks Research Intern

Overview

The Kentucky Center for Economic Policy is looking for a highly motivated individual to join its team as a summer research intern. The intern will carry out research and writing and will support communications and advocacy to advance our policy goals.

Background
KCEP is a program of the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED) launched in 2011. KCEP uses research and analysis in combination with communications, public education, coalition building and advocacy to broaden the base of decision makers, organizations, institutions and citizens supportive of better state policies. KCEP’s role is as a respected provider of solid information about these issues and their impact on Kentuckians. KCEP strives for strategic, timely, and analytically rigorous research as well as compelling, clear and accessible communications. We seek to influence public understanding and debate about state fiscal and economic issues and contribute to real, lasting improvements in policy.

Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED) is a 41 year-old multi-strategy sustainable economic development organization that seeks to create economic alternatives that work for people and places in Central Appalachia and Kentucky. MACED’s long-term goals are a strong and diverse economy, increased family well-being – particularly for people with low-income – healthy and protected land, air and water, and an effective and accountable democracy. MACED is a fast-paced, dynamic and growing organization with a 32-person staff that manages over $28 million in total assets. MACED seeks to make meaningful progress towards a Just Appalachian Transition through the following core strategies: 1) investing capital in enterprises and communities, 2) demonstrating development ideas, 3) engaging in research, communications and advocacy for policy change, and 4) building entrepreneurial and leadership capacity.

Position Description

Duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following areas:

Conduct research and writing

·  Collect and analyze existing policy research on assigned topics.

·  Collect and analyze data, including in Excel.

·  Provide support for a survey research project including following up with respondents by phone.

·  Author blogs, memos and other documents.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Characteristics

Knowledge and experience:Graduate degree holder or current graduate student seeking degree in public administration or related field.

Personal characteristics: Highly motivated; well-organized; attentive to detail; able to multi-task; able to take direction; committed to social and economic justice.

Technology and software:Working competence with MS Excel and Word software programs.

Communications:Strong writing skills; strong interpersonal communication skills.

Physical:Close vision with or without corrective lenses necessary for computer work; manual dexterity needed to operate computer; ability to perform assigned duties in a time-efficient manner; a valid driver's license and ability to drive.

Additional Information
This is a paid, 8-10 week, 40 hour per week internship. Hourly rate will be based on experience. Some benefits will apply. The internship is based in Berea, Kentucky. Berea is a beautiful, small college town, less than an hour south of Lexington, on the edge of the Appalachian region. MACED is an equal opportunity employer.
