VI-E-1.Analyze the role of law enforcement in responding to sexual abuse.

Directions to Students

1. Review the elements of sexual abuse (Wis. Stats. 940.225).
2. Read various scenarios provided by the instructor and determine if the elements of sexual abuse apply to that scenario. Would you make an arrest based on the elements in the scenario?
3. Discuss some of the unique dynamics involved in your specific scenario (date rapes, statutory rape situation, victim/offender relationship, etc.).

Directions to Evaluator

1. Review the elements of sexual abuse (Wis. Stats. 940.225) with the students (may want to provide copies of the statute to students).
2. This exercise can be done in groups or as individuals. If you will do this exercise in groups, break the class into groups of 2-3 people.
3. Provide various scenarios to students and have them determine if the elements of sexual abuse apply to the scenarios. Ask students if they would make an arrest based on the elements in the scenario?
4. Discuss some of the unique dynamics involved in each specific scenario (date rapes, statutory rape situation, victim/offender relationship, etc.).

VI-E-3.Identify other resources that can assist in sexual assault cases.

Directions to Students

For this assessment, you will be required to write a report (or respond orally) regarding an appropriate response to a reported sexual assault. Your instructor will be evaluating your performance using the scoring guide provided.

Directions to Evaluator

1. Break the class into groups of 3-4.
2. Assign roles (officer(s), victim, and observer).
3. Provide role play cards to the victim and observer (the observer can provide information that would normally be given by dispatch to the officer(s)).
4. The people role playing as the officers will respond to the victim and conduct an interview/investigation on the sexual assault.
5. The observer will provide feedback to the officer(s) on their response and interview with the victim.
6. After each role play, have students switch roles and provide them with another scenario. Change role plays as many times as needed.
7. Once the role plays are over, have students write a report or report back orally on their observations during the interview with the victim.

Directions to Students

1. Listen to the instructor's presentation and conduct research on the role of the SANE nurse and other resources.
2. At the instructors direction, put together a report or short presentation on how law enforcement interacts with these resources during a sexual assault case investigation. Specifically, identify how these resources can help you during the investigation and list the steps you would take to contact and interact with these resources.

Directions to Evaluator

1. Give a short presentation on the role of the SANE nurse and other resources available to help law enforcement and victims during a sexual assault case.
2. Assign each student, or groups of students, a resource (SANE nurse, RapeCrisis center, Registered Sex Offender database, etc.).
3. Have students conduct further research on these resources through their agency contacts (if they are already working at an agency), through the internet and by using the student text.
4. Direct students to either put together a report (written paper) or short presentation (in groups or individually) on how law enforcement interacts with these resources during a sexual assault case investigation. Specifically, identify how these resources can help you during the investigation and list the steps you would take to contact and interact with these resources.
