ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You must verify you have a parent or grandparent who is a U. S. military veteran of a foreign war. (DD-214, Page 13 or equivalent )
  1. You must be a graduating high school senior or college undergraduate student.
  1. Award applicants must provide verification of acceptance/enrollment in college or university at interview.

APPLICATION CRITERIA

To be considered for a scholarship, this application, an essay and two letters of recommendation must be submitted. Official school transcript may be mailed from the school or included with the application. Please submit only the information requested and do not expand this application form onto additional pages.

All application information, including school transcript, must be postmarked not later than April 30, 2016. Applications that are incomplete, not in accordance with the directions, or not postmarked by the above mentioned date will not be eligible.

Please check below to ensure that you have all necessary information and your application is complete:

____Essay: The essay should be between 2/3 and 1 full page. It will be on a separate sheet of paper, with no name (essays will be coded), in your own handwriting and include each of the following:

  1. What school activity had the most meaning to you and why.
  2. Which community activity had the most meaning to you and why
  3. Why you feel you should be considered for this scholarship.

____Letter of recommendation from an instructor – for this school year. (1 page only)

____Letter of recommendation from someone affiliated with a community activity described in your application – for 2015-2016. (1 page only)

____Official school transcript from current school. The transcript must be sealed or otherwise official as defined by your school. Photocopies are not acceptable.

SELECTION

1. Due to the large number of applicants, finalists are determined, in part, by the neatness, accuracy and professionalism of applications.

2. Final selection will be made by a panel of VFW Post #1561 members. Total anonymity will be observed until the finalists have been selected. That is the reason for no name on the essay. Any panel member with any knowledge of an applicant will automatically disqualify him/herself from the selection process.

3. Scholarship(s) of up to $1000 will be awarded to graduating high school seniors or college undergraduate students.

4. Finalists will be notified and an appointment made to meet with the scholarship committee for an interview with at least one parent. Interviews will be at a location to be determined at the time. The accompanying parent is not part of the interview process, but must be present.
