Project PAVE

SafeSchool Community Award

Sponsored by Kaiser Permanente

Project PAVE(Promoting Alternatives to Violence through Education) is a non-profit organization providing violence prevention and intervention services to Denver metro youth, families, and schools. Kaiser Permanente, Colorado’s oldest and largest health care organization, has been providing health-related educational theatre programs as a free community service to schools for more than 17 years.

DESCRIPTION OF AWARD

At our annual awards luncheon in May 2004, Project PAVE and Kaiser Permanente will recognize three schools in the Denver metropolitan area doing an outstanding job in creating a safe and civil school environment that promotes student safety, mutual respect, and academic achievement. Three schools—preferably one elementary, one middle, and one high school—will be selected for the award with one of the three winners selected as the outstanding safe school for the year. This outstanding school will receive a $3,000 award and will be featured in a short video produced by KMGH Channel 7. The other two schools will each receive a $2,000 cash awards and will also be recognized at our luncheon. A committee of school and community professionals selects the winning schools. Final selections will be made by April 1, 2004.

This award is for schools that are already demonstrating a safe school environment and are committed to sustaining it. It is not a grant to initiate safe-school planning and/or activities. The selection committee reserves the right to withhold an award in a category if applications in that grade level do not meet a minimum standard. In this case, a second award would be made to a school in one of the other two categories, or the schools selected would receive an increased cash award.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

To be eligible, public, charter, or private schools must be located in the five-county Denver metro area (Adams, Arapahoe, Denver, Jefferson, or Douglas counties). Schools that have received the award in prior years are not eligible.

To be considered for the award, applications must be postmarked by or delivered to Project PAVE, 2051 York Street, Denver, CO 80205-5713 by no later than 5:00 pm,Friday, December 12, 2003. Submit the following:

  • A completed application (see attached form with submission checklist);
  • A cover letter signed by the principal indicating commitment to safe-school programming and how your school would use the $3,000 cash award. (Funds must be used to support violence prevention and school safety activities.)
