20 – Live a Holy Life to Honor God

1 – God’s Holiness

You cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live. (Exodus 33:20)

Among those who approach me I will show myself holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored. (Leviticus 10:3)

I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. (Leviticus 11:44)

Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. (Leviticus 19:2)

You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own. (Leviticus 20:26)

You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, He will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after He has been good to you. (Joshua 24:19-20)

There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

(1Samuel 2:2)

Far be it from God to de evil, from the Almighty to do wrong. (Job 34:10)

You are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. (Psalm 22:3)

Your statutes stand firm; holiness adorns your house for endless days, O LORD. (Psalm 93:5)

Let them praise your great and awesome name – He is holy… Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His footstool; He is holy. (Psalm 99:3-5)

Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

(Psalm 99:9)

He provided redemption for His people; He ordained His covenant forever – holy and awesome is His name. (Psalm 111:9)

The LORD Almighty will be exalted by His justice, and the holy God will show Himself holy by His righteousness. (Isaiah 5:16)

The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, He is the one you are to fear, He is the one you are to dread, and He will be a sanctuary. (Isaiah 8:13-14)

For this is what the high and lofty One says – He who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.” (Isaiah 57:15)

This is what the Sovereign LORD says: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Sovereign LORD, when I show myself holy through you before their eyes.

(Ezekiel 36:22-23)

And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD. (Ezekiel 38:23)

I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned, and the nations will know that I the LORD am the Holy One in Israel. (Ezekiel 39:7)

I will show myself holy through them in the sight of many nations. (Ezekiel 39:27)

Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. (Habakkuk 1:13)

Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. (2 Corinthians 1:12)

Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. (Hebrews 12:10)

Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. (Hebrews 12:14)

Just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1Peter 1:15-16)

Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you along are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed. (Revelation 15:4)

2 – Sanctification

You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. (Exodus 19:6)

You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. (Exodus 31:13)

Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy. (Leviticus 20:7)

You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own. (Leviticus 20:26)

Then you will remember to obey all my commands and will be consecrated to your God.

(Numbers 15:40)

For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be His people, His treasured possession. (Deuteronomy 7:6)

And the LORD has declared this day that you are His people, His treasured possession as He promised, and that you are to keep all His commands. He has declared that He will set you in praise, fame and honor high above all the nations He has made and that you will be a people holy to the LORD your God, as He promised. (Deuteronomy 26:18-19)

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. (Ezekiel 36:25-27)

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth…For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. (John 17:17-19)

Now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. (Acts 20:32)

So that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me. (Acts 26:18)

Just as you used to offer the parts of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness leading to holiness. (Romans 6:19)

Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:22)

If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches. (Romans 11:16)

So that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:16)

To those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Corinthians 1:2)

It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. (1Corinthians 1:30)

But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1Corinthians 6:11)

For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. (Ephesians 1:4)

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in His sight, without blemish and free from accusation. (Colossians 1:21-22)

May He strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all His holy ones. (1Thessalonians 3:13)

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified. (1Thessalonians 4:3)

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you His Holy Spirit. (1Thessalonians 4:7-8)

May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Thessalonians 5:23)

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.

(2 Thessalonians 2:13)

While we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good. (Titus 2:13-14)

Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. (Hebrews 2:11)

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (Hebrews 10:10)

Because by one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.

(Hebrews 10:14)

Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in His holiness. (Hebrews 12:10)

Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through His own blood.

(Hebrews 13:12)

Who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood. (1Peter 1:2)

You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. (1Peter 2:9)

But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin. (1John 1:7)

3 – Crucify the Sinful Nature and Live a Holy Life to Honor God

I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. (Genesis 17:1)

Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. (Leviticus 19:2)

Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy. (Leviticus 20:7)

You must be blameless before the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 18:13)

The LORD your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love Him with all your heart and with all your soul, to live. (Deuteronomy 30:6)

If you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, then you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and without fear. You will surly forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by. Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning. You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid, and many will court your favor.

(Job 11:14-19)

Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance, for no godless man would dare come before Him!

(Job 13:16)

Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. (Psalm 73:1)

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. (Psalm 119:9)

Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word. (Psalm 119:36-37)

Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me. (Psalm 119:133)

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)

Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. (Ezekiel 18:30-31)

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. (Ezekiel 36:25-27)

To finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness. (Daniel 9:24)

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (Matthew 5:8)

If your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is the darkness! (Matthew 6:23)

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be completely lighted, as when the light of a lamp shines on you. (Luke 11:34-36)

Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. (Luke 12:15)

If we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection. We know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin – because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. (Romans 6:5-7)

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to Him as instrument of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. (Romans 6:12-14)
