President’s Report

(Kingsley Fiske)

I am looking forward to our meeting on Monday night. Not only is it a Ladies/Partners night but we will welcome District Governor Brian Buchanan for his official visit. It will be a busy night which will include the Induction of Paul Godden, it is always exciting to get a new member, and the presentation of our “Lions 100 Community Grant” to Jenny Carson of Pines Learning.

We have had a few things on in the past month. School sponsorships have been presented at Vermont Primary and Box Hill Institute thanks to Mike Milton and John Anderson. Thanks too to the Sausage Sizzlers who had another good result at Brentford Square on Sunday while another group of members were socialising at Licola.

The Licola trip was a great success. The accommodation and catering facilities were great and of course Licola is a beautiful place. Needless to say we all had a wonderful time and a lot of fun. Thanks to 2 VP Paul for the organisation. I have no doubt that we will have another trip.

Of course Licola’s primary purpose is to provide an exciting experience for children who would not normally get the opportunity for a holiday. It is good to know that we have four children and a Leader in Brad Underhill at the camp this week.

See you all on Monday night.

Kingsley.

Box Hill Tafe Scholarshipreport

(John Anderson – 3rd VP)

Box Hill Tafe student, Mikaela – Lee Saunders has been presented with the Annual Vermont Lions Scholarship. Mikaela is studying Nursing and plans to do further studies to become a qualified Mid Wife. She was one of three students recommended for the Scholarship by college staff. The final decision was made by the Vermont Third Vice Presidents committee.

Vermont Primary School, Ron Bromley Memorial Scholarship report.

On Monday 12 September, President Kingsley and Mike Milton attended the Vermont Primary School’s morning assembly, to present $300 sponsorships to two students. All the school students and staff along with a large group of parents were there to hear Mike make the presentation. Unfortunately one winner was not available and will receive their sponsorship later.

The winning students were nominated by a panel of teachers who considered well motivated students who are showing good academic potential and who would benefit from the sponsorship.

School Principal Dr Robin Strickland thanked Vermont Lions and said that the sponsorships were great value and that several past recipients had gone on to get excellent results at Vermont Secondary College. She also mentioned that it was 21 years (1995) since Ron Bromley first approached her about Lions providing the sponsorships. Unfortunately Pauline, who was invited to attend by the school, was unable to attend at the last minute.

Lion Mike Milton, Scholarship winner, Pres. Kingsley Fiske, Principal Robin Strickland.

Golf Day Report

(Bill Krogh)

Lock in Sunday March 5th 2017 at the Dorset GC - tee off Daylight, and off by 12 noon. How did it happen?? -Robyne Somerville (CPEC) and I will explain at the first committee meeting – at The Dorset Gardens, Private Dining Room, in the Bistro from 5 -5.15 to 6.30 on Wednesday Sept. 28th. I will make every endeavour to fire a copy of ‘The Agenda’ off to committee members over the weekend which, will give committee members time to check out your own areas of expertise - ie your contacts with playing groups, Sponsors, Volunteers, Raffles, Box’s, Player’s Prizes, Catering, plus our families and supporters - time to think, and planas to how best recruit new starters, groups etc.

It will probably be the last time we will be granted access to Dorset – certainly on a Sunday – so it is very important that we remember why we are so determined to make the most of this opportunity - it is to enable us to donate our earnings to CPEC to enable them to purchase vital, new and urgently needed equipment to those most needy. That’s our special challenge - let’s give it everything we’ve got to go out on a high !!!

Cheers , Bill

Special Request from CPEC

(Refer Michele Burns)

As you know, the Melbourne Marathon is CPEC’s major fundraiser for the year.

It is CPEC’s job to source volunteers and allocate all of the jobs.

At this point in time, only have about 50% of the contracted number of volunteers that I need, and I am starting to get worried. We have to provide over 300 volunteers for this event.

I am currently seeking volunteers for Sunday 16th October assist with the activities like:

  • Marshalling
  • Drinks
  • Show Bags
  • Medals
  • Start Line
  • Concourse people control/directions
  • Finish Line,
  • Brunton Avenue Direction Control/Marshalling
  • Clothing Drop

None of these require heavy labour etc. Some do require standing quite a bit.

The starting times range from 5am – 7am at the MCG. The whole event is finished by around 2pm.Free T-Shirts and hats are provided for the volunteers.

If anyone is interested in volunteering from any of the Lions Clubs, could they please register via this link:

In the section where it asks “connection to CPEC” please ask them to writeLions Club, that way I will be able to group people together.

I really need to have all of the people allocated by the end of next week.

Many thanks

Michele

Joke File

Son: “Dad, we’re learning about prisms at school. They're fascinating.” Dad: “That’s good son, because as a dyslexic black boy, you’re bound to end up in one.”

Paddy decides to take up boxing and goes for the required medical.

A few days later the doctor ‘phones and says: “Paddy, you realise you’ve got sugar diabetes.”

Paddy says:“Nice one, when do I fight him?”

It was hard getting over my addiction to the Hokey Pokey.

But I’ve turned myself around and that’s what it’s all about.

Paddy caught his Wife having an affair and decided to kill her and himself. He puts the gun to his head, looks at his Wife and says:

"Don't laugh, you’re next!!"

Little boy gets home from school and says: "Dad, I've got a part in the school play as a man who's been married for 25 years."

His Dad replies: "Never mind Son. Maybe next time you'll get a speaking part!
