An Introduction to Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling Using SMART PLS

This workshop will introduce you to partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modelling (SEM).

Dates: Tuesday 10th January 2017

Times: 09.00 – 17.00

Venue: Room BSG/25 (University of Huddersfield, Business School)

Social scientists have been using statistical analysis tools for many years to extend their ability to develop, explore and confirm research findings. Applications of first-generation statistical methods such as factor analysis and regression analysis dominate the research landscape through the 1980s. But since the early 1990s, second generation methods have expanded rapidly and, in some disciplines, represent almost 50% of the statistical tools applied in empirical research.

This workshop has been designed to give participants an insight into the new second-generation statistical methods and establish a foundation that will enable them to understand and apply the emerging process known as partial least squares structural equation modelling: more specifically we will be focusing on Smart-PLS.

Participants are expected to bring with them their own laptops with both Smart-PLS and the latest version of G Power loaded and working. Links to the programmes can be found at the end of this flier.

Dr Alan Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in Digital Marketing at the University of Huddersfield. He is a relatively new academic but has over 25 years’ experience in industry. His application of statistics has been in the field of market research in the pharmaceutical and health sectors. Dr Shaw is also a director at Strategic Planet (a digital marketing agency) and a trustee at X-PERT Health (a charity providing educational support to those people living with diabetes).

You will receive notification if a place is allocated to you. Please do not make any travel arrangements until you have received confirmation of a place. We have a limited number of places available on NARTI events and if at any time you need to withdraw your registration or cancel your place please inform us immediately so that we can offer the place to someone else.

NARTI and the host institution will cover the full cost of the event and participants are asked to cover the cost of any travel and accommodation as required.

For further details about this or any other NARTI event, please contact Jo Garrick at

When applying for a place on this workshop you must confirm that:

1.  You have your own laptop and that you have installed a working version of Smart PLS 3 – you only need the student version for this workshop which is free.

2.  You have the eduroam wireless facility installed on your laptop: you will need this to download the various data sets.
