Requirements for General Academic Scholarship

  1. All applicants must be a college bound 12th grade student with a GPA 3.4/4 (4.25/5)and either

Currently enrolled in a West Ventura County High School, or

A senior whose family has been a member of VCCAA for at least 1 ½ years..

**The Applicant need not be of Chinese descent.**

  1. Essay 1 “Current Goals; Envisioned Future”: Describe what your current aspirations are and what you foresee yourself doing in seven years. Include any steps you are taking now toward your goal.
  1. Essay 2: “Bridging the Gap” Briefly describeyour own understanding of the history of Chinese-Americans and therole they played in today’s society. (please, no Wikipedia or other sources) Includeactions that you believeclubs such as VCCAA may take to enhance the bridge between the Chinese-Americans andthe multi-culturalcommunities in which they live.

Limit each essay to one-page, 12 point font, double spaced.

Applicant should include his/her name and school in upper right corner.

  1. List any special honors/awards received with a brief description as well as the date received. Include lists of varsity sport, extracurricular activities, and community service along with dates of participation.

THE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT IS SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE ESSAYS.

Descriptions of the three special scholarships:

Special Yu Family Academic Scholarship ($750) (Specify if you apply for this)

In addition to the general requirementsshowing evidence of academic excellence, the applicant must show evidence of personal involvement in the promotion of Chinese culture, and distinguished accomplishment in eithermusic, dance, or athletics. An audiovisual supplement may be included but should be limited to five minutes in length. The Applicant should choose only one of the above fields for consideration.

Special Little Family Chinese Language Scholarship ($500) (Specify if you apply for this)

The intent of this scholarship is to encourage the speaking of Chinese as a second language. It is limited to persons who do not speak Chinese as their primary language. The senior student applicant should have a minimum GPA of 2.5/4, and must write the first required essay. In lieu of writing the second essay, the applicant must write either an essay (in English or Chinese) on “My Process of Learning Chinese”, or an essay written in Chinese which is a profile of himself/herself, including personal goals and what he/she intends to do with the Chinese language. The essay will be evaluated by the Little Family.

Special Lena Lee Ho Dancer Scholarship ($750) (Specify if you apply for this)

This scholarship is specifically given to any college bound student that is currently enrolled in Mrs. Yu Ling Lu’s Classical Chinese Dance group.The two essays and listing of other activities are required but the official transcripts, SAT/ACT, AP scores not required.
