Dear
It has come to our attention that you have decided to home school your child. Previously, your child had been receiving special education services through the public school. There are two choices a parent/guardian can make when electing to home school, either becoming a Registered Home SchoolorNon-Registered Home School Family. Under the Nonpublic School Act of 1921 (PA 302), a Registered Home School is eligible for special education or related services for students with special needs. A Non-Registered Home School Family is not eligible for special education or related services.
In order to register as a home school which will allow your child to continue receiving special education or related services, you will need to contact Tami Feldpausch, Office of Nonpublic Schools Unit, Michigan Department of Education, to obtain the correct paperwork to register.

We also recommend that you contact your local school district and Melissa Nelson (Business Office) at the Van Buren ISD to inform them of your home school status after registering with the Michigan Department of Education, so that special education services can be reinstated.
As of now, the Van Buren ISD and local school district will continue special education and any related services your child is currently receiving at the school for 30 days from the date of this notice. If you are not registered with the state as a Registered Home School after this 30 day time limit, special education and related services will be discontinued. If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact Dave Manson, Director of Special Education, at (269) 674-8091.
Sincerely,
