Situation:

There are two competing T-Shirt companies:

Mr. B’s Tees charges an initial fee of $50, and an additional $6 per shirt.

Shelly’s Sea Shore Shirts charges only $20 at first, but charges $9 per shirt.

Questions:

  1. Identify the variables in this situation.
  2. Write a variable declaration for each of the variables listed in question 1.
  3. Which one(s) are independent? Which one(s) are dependent? How can you tell?
  4. Make a table that compares the variables for both companies for 1, 2, 3, 10, 50, and 100 shirts.
  5. Graph both companies’ rate schedules on the same set of axes.
  6. Write equations to give you the total cost for each company when you know the number of shirts being purchased.
  7. At what point do both companies charge the same price for the same number of shirts?
  8. On what conditions should they use each company?
  9. If Mr. B’s Tees and Shelly’s Sea Shore Shirts both pay $4 per shirt, how many shirts does each company have to sell in one order to make a profit of $100?(Note: PROFIT is the difference between what the T-shirt companies PAY for shirts and how much they SELL them for!)
