COCKPIT DISPLAY OF DATA LINKED AERONAUTICAL & WEATHER INFORMATION

(Presented by the Rapporteur of the Ad-Hoc Group on Aeronautical Charting)

SUMMARY
This information paper introduces new activities of SAE which might be of interest for the AIS-AIMSG.
Action by the AIS-AIMSG is at paragraph 4.

1.INTRODUCTION

1.1The Ad-Hoc Group on Aeronautical Charting will start discussing the usage of symbolisation of features on electronic charts and whether it shall go into Annex 4 for electronic charts or not.

1.2This discussion is at the beginning.

2.DISCUSSION

2.1In relation to possible new Product Specifications, Application, and Service descriptions in Annex 4, the Ad-Hoc Group on Aeronautical Charting raised the point that the work of “SAE G10 Aerospace Behaviour Engineering TC, A-4 Aircraft Instruments Committee” has also an “Aeronautical Information System Committee”. The work of this committee in relation to electronic aeronautical symbols and human factors (colours, fonts, depictions …) might be of interest for future work of the Ad-Hoc Group on Aeronautical Charting and the AIS-AIMSG as a whole. In the past this committee developed:

a)SAE ARP[1]5289 – Electronic Aeronautical Symbols,

b)SAE ARP5621 – Electronic Display of Aeronautical Information (Charts) – Design Guidelines.

2.2At the request of RTCA SC-206 / EUROCAE WG-76 “Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Data Link”, SAE has now established SAEG10A, the Aeronautical Information System Committee, to develop:

  • SAEARP6467 - Cockpit Display of Data Linked Aeronautical Information,
  • SAE G10W, the Weather Information Systems Committee, is developing:
  • SAE ARP 5740 - Cockpit Display of Data Linked Weather Information.
  • These new ARPs cover the display of data linked aeronautical, weather and meteorological information; human factors recommendations for the cockpit display of this information; and recommendations for the text, graphics, colors, texture and symbols that define this information. These recommendations apply to the cockpits of certified civil aircraft using installed or portable displays.
  • At this point in time SAE G10A and SAEG10W are finishing the development of their first complete draft, and their biggest concern is the lack of industry participation, especially from the avionics manufacturers. They have telecons on a regular basis and their next face-to-face meeting is January 28-31, 2013 in Melbourne, Florida, USA.
  • They plan to finish these documents by mid 2013 and then put them out for ballot in the late summer or early fall time frame. They would like comments from a very broad based aviation industry population. Their goal is to publish the documents by the end of this year.
  • RTCA SC-206 / EUROCAE WG-76 need these documents as part of the work on the Minimum Aviation System Performance Standards (MASPS) for AIS and MET Uplink Services MASPS. It is planned to finish the completed draft of the MASPS by the end of 2013, for publication in June 2014.

3.ACTION BY THE AIS-AIMSG

3.1The AIS-AIMSG is invited to:

a)note the contents of this information paper;

b)to note that industry standardisation for AIS and MET data links is continuing including depiction of dynamic data in the cockpit.
