TRANSLATIONS

Fixed field

Enter the language code for the work in hand. If the work is multilingual—usually including the original language and the language of translation—enter the code for the language of translation.

Variable fields

  • 041: Enter the language code of the translation in $a and the original language in $h (ex. 1). If the work is multilingual, enter the languages of the work in hand—in order of predominance—in $a and the original language in $h (ex. 2). The first language in $a should match that in the fixed field.
  • 240: Enter the uniform title for the original work, followed by a period, $l and the language of the translation (ex. 3). If the book contains the original text along with the translation, enter in $l the language of the translation followed by a space, ampersand, space, and the original language (ex. 4). There is no period at the end of the 240 field.
  • 546: If the work is multilingual, enter the languages of the text (ex. 5). Do not make a 546 note for a simple translation.
  • 600: Make no changes to subject headings when the work is a translation. Exception: if the book is a collection of translations of separately published works of belles-lettres, make a subject added entry in the form: [heading for the author] $v Translations into [language of translation] (ex. 6).
  • 700: If the book is a work of belles-lettres and the translator’s name appears on the title page, make an added entry for the translator. Otherwise, do not make added entries for translators unless the work has a corporate or title main entry.

Call number

If there is a uniform title on the bib. record, cutter for the original title and add two digits based on the language of the translation (ex. 7). If there is no uniform title, cutter for the translated title and do not use the translation digits.
