SAFETY COUNCIL MEETING

Representatives: Wade McPhetridge, Alison Boyce, Kent Gale, Adam Kohley, Hilary Shook, Chris Friar, Hudson Plass, and Elissa Bratcher

I. FOLLOW-UP FROM MAY’S MEETING:

  • There was a total of 26 Bear Encounters.
  • Electric Fence Feedback:
  • Adam Kohley presented the Fence Field Evaluation.
  • Less than Lethal was briefly discussed.
  • Developing another test without individuals or an active fire camp being present was discussed.
  • Shotgun issuing protocols were discussed.
  • If current issuing protocols are used in a busy fire season, we may be short shot guns.
  • Adam Kohley distributed the Non-law Enforcement Firearms Issuance Program 2012 Statistics and Summary
  • Driver’s License Issuing (OF-346)
  • John Palmer has developed a system that will eliminate the need for supervisors to store the form.
  • The system will also issue a plastic OF-346 card.

II. UPCOMING RELATED TRAININGS:

  • Firearm Instructor Training Fall 2012
  • Occurred last week. It was a success with a lot of positive feedback.
  • OSHA 600 – March 11-14, 2013
  • ATV Instructor Course – May 2013
  • Potential candidates need to be targeted.

III. ONGOING ISSUES

  • Bike Helmets
  • This is a base policy that is an issue every year.
  • The MP and Post Commander contact Kent. It frames AFS in a bad light.
  • Is providing helmets beside bike stations an option to encourage use?
  • Fuel Left in Saws/Pumps during Demob
  • Pages 108 and 109 of the Handy Dandy address this issue.
  • Used Batteries need to be properly packaged and be neutralized.

IV. INJURIES

  • 2012 Injuries to date
  • 81 Comp Claims filed (CA-1s and CA-2s) resulting in 26 recordable OSHA reports.
  • 2012 to date costs of injuries
  • Medical - $228,383.61
  • Comp - $244,963.79
  • Total Calendar Year 2012 - $473,347.40

V. PREPAREDNESS REVIEW FINDINGS

  • Risk Assessments
  • There is a new risk assessment form.
  • It will be uploaded to the website.
  • Perhaps risk assessment can be somewhat standardized?
  • It is not suppose to be standardized as each office needs to closely evaluate all risks.
  • A workshop would be very helpful to help offices out.

VI. SAFETY AWARDS

  • Recipients of the 2012 Safety Awards
  • Wade McPhetridge – Vehicle Inspection Proposal
  • Evan Karp – Crosswalk Proposal
  • DPW is currently considering this option.

TRAINING, ADAM KOHLEY

  • AFS has a lot of ergonomic needs.
  • Bo Harris would like to know who has ergonomic needs in the organization, so that he can address them as soon as possible.

MILITARY/SOUTHERN ZONES, WADE MCPHETRIDGE

  • There should be a training requirement to pull trailers.
  • Doug Mackey will research training requirements, while Bo Harris will talk with transportation about holding the classes.

GALENA ZONE, HUDSON PLASS

  • More discussion concerning ergonomic needs, specific to dispatchers.
