1.POSITION SUMMARY

The Container Capacity Improvement Program is VFPA’s long-term strategy to deliver projects to meet anticipated growth in container capacity demand until 2030. The Program looks at two main opportunities: improvements that can be made to existing terminals and infrastructure to accommodate growth, and new infrastructure that may be required as demand continues to increase.

Container traffic through Canada’s Pacific Gateway is expected to double over the next 10 to 15 years, and nearly triple by 2030.

This position is responsible for assisting the Port’s Container Capacity Improvement Program in achieving its goals as directed.

This work term would provide experience in Environmental Assessment for a large infrastructure project. Technical work willinclude providing input and seeking understanding in group discussions but will primarily involve reviewing and commenting onreports and drawings by others(particularly as they cross discipline boundaries), and supporting on the oversight of consultants conducting studies to support the assessment. Specific technical problems will be assigned for completion under the supervision of the Environmental Manager.

VFPA is seeking applicants from Environmental-related disciplines.

VFPA is interested in graduate level students available from January 8, 2018 through August 31, 2018.

2.ORGANIZATION

This position reports to the Manager, Environmental Assessment

3.ACCOUNTABILITIES

3.1Container Capacity Improvement Program

The successful applicant is expected to provide several of the following services:

  • Assist in contract document preparation;
  • Assist in overseeing consultant studies andprogress reporting;
  • Assist with evaluation of draft reports and of their compliance with VFPAneed and criteria;
  • Assist with preparation of VFPA documents for facilitating decision making;
  • Collaborative and/or independentresearch in areas including but not limited to environmental assessment, environment protection, habitat compensation, and sustainable development.
  • Other assigned duties as required.

4.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must be a full-time student enrolled in a post-secondary institution with 4-6 months related experience. Must have proficiency with MS Office.

Preference to will be given to candidates who:

  • holda British Columbia Class 5 license
  • Master’s level of studies with Environmental/Science background
  • have experience on environmental assessments

VFPA student positions are available to individuals who are soon to enter the workforce on a permanent basis, and are designed to provide appropriate experience to prepare them for an environmentalcareer.

5.SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

VFPA is seeking an individual with a strong orientation towards customer service who is highly motivated to work both independently and in a team environment.A good command of the English language and strong written communication skills are essential. An ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with all contacts and to demonstrate good judgment and interpersonal skills are essential.

6.WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office conditions with some degree ofoff-siteoutdoor and construction site visits, primarilyduring regular daytime working hours.

37.5 hours per week/$20.75 per hour.
