Now! Charity Group Ltd provides a furniture re-use service through its three stores in Lewes, Hailsham and Eastbourne providing low-cost affordable furniture, preventing unnecessary waste and reducing landfill. In addition to this core aspect to our work, we also have two training centres, one in Eastbourne and the other in Hailsham and run various training courses for disadvantaged adults to help them gain confidence, social skills and support them back into work.
An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Van/Store Assistant Apprentice based at our Lewes Furniture Now store.
Job Description
Job Title / Van/Store Assistant (Apprentice) – based in Lewes
Apprentice Details / The successful applicant will undertake an Intermediate NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service via Heathercroft Training Academy.Training will take place in the workplace.
Hours of Work / 37½ hours a week over 5 days, Monday to Saturdays on a rota basis, between 9am and 5pm including a 30min meal break. Some Sunday working may be required at times. Flexibility to the hours of work is essential to meet the demands of the organisation.
Location / The Now Charity Group has premises in Lewes, Eastbourne and Hailsham.
We currently have a vacancy based at our store in North Street, Lewes. At times, e.g. to cover annual leave or sickness, you may be required to work at one of our other locations.
Contract Type / One year fixed term apprentice agreement.
Start Date / January 2018
Salary / £3.60 /hour.

Reporting to / Store Manager
Responsible for / No line management responsibilities.
Overall Purpose of the Post / The primary purpose of the job is to collect donations of furniture from the public and to deliver items which have been purchased in our stores. The job includes the loading and unloading of the vans and then assisting with the safe delivery of items to customer’s homes.
The job is varied and at times we will need to post holder to take a flexible approach to the work, helping as and when required in the stores or other locations.
Main Duties and Responsibilities /
  • Ensuring safe transportation and storage of goods at all times.
  • Loading and unloading vans.
  • Delivery and collection of items to and from customer’s houses or other locations.
  • Undertaking any manual handling as required.
  • Working as a team with other staff and volunteers.
  • To work efficiently and effectively to reduce costs.
  • Assist within the store area as required, including helping with the storage & display of furniture and assisting & serving customers.
  • Providing a high level of customer service at all times.
  • Ensure all Health and Safety procedures, including manual handling, vehicle safety and all other good practise is adhered to.
  • Attend training and staff meetings as required.
  • Be involved in occasional promotional activity.
  • Carry out any other reasonable tasks to develop and promote the work of the charity.

Person Specification
Essential Requirements /
  • Capable of heavy lifting where mechanical assistance is not possible.
  • Able to work on own initiative.
  • Excellent time-keeping.

  • Commitment to work as part of a team.
  • Awareness of health & safety.
  • Flexible approach to the work.
  • Reasonable standard of written and spoken English.
  • Reasonable level of numeracy.
  • Keen to undertake relevant NVQ training.

Desirable Requirements /
  • Good communication skills.
  • Commitment to reuse and environmental awareness.
  • Experience of multi-drop delivery systems, furniture removal etc.
  • Warehouse or retail experience.
  • Confident with IT systems.
