EXPLANATION OF ASSIGNMENTS

FORMAL ESSAYS (written out of class): 750 Words minimum

These essays should be well developed, organized and edited. Formal essays must be neatly typed or word-processed and peer reviewed in class. All formal essays should conform to the MLA standards given in Research Guide of your textbook. See “Format for All Writings” in this syllabus for the correct format of these writings.

  • Proofread and edit these papers carefully BEFORE turning them in to me. I deduct major points for development, grammar and punctuation errors. If you have writing deficiencies, I will refer you to your handbook section of your textbook, and I am available during my office hours to help you.

On your first paper I will note some of your strengths and weaknesses, but I will not point out every error. Therefore, if I point out that you are making punctuation errors, for example, then you need to proofread for those types of errors in your writing as well as seek help to correct those errors. Continuing to make the same errors in your writings will show that your writing is not improving, and your grades will reflect this.

Late Papers: No Such Thing!
  • From the day that the essay is due, you will still have ONE class meeting to SUBMIT it without penalty. After that time, a zero will be recorded for that assignment and the paper will be accepted for the word count only. This rule applies to essays only.
  • Papers not turned in to the instructor in class must be submitted to the department secretary in bldg. 7-163 (8am-5pm). Do not email papers to me and do not put papers under my office door.

Research paper:

  • This paper will require research of both primary and secondary sources. It will be 4-5 pages using 4-5 different types of sources. You will use MLA documentation. Begin your research as soon as you receive this assignment.

Other Assignments: This category includes in-class assignments, homework and peer reviews.

  • PEER REVIEWS: (10 points each)

The peer review is an essential component of Freshman Composition. Before turning in a formal essay for grading, you will get into groups where your classmates will read your paper carefully and give helpful suggestions on how to improve your writing. Although you may not use all of their suggestions, it is a good idea to let fresh eyes read your ideas to see if they are clearly expressed. Therefore, this session is IMPORTANT in helping you.

  • Your attendance is MANDATORY. The peer review sessions will help you better understand those elements that I am looking for and grading in your paper. Come to these sessions PUNCTUALLY. This means word-processing your paper a day BEFORE it is due for peer review, not on the day it is to be reviewed.
  • To receive 10 points, you must have a TYPED (printed) copy ready to be reviewed.
  • Assignments in this category cannot be made up.

.CLASSROOM POLICIES

Grading:

Gordon Rule:

The Gordon Rule requires you to write a minimum of 6000 words of assessed writing in this course.

  • You may receive “A, B, C or F” for your efforts in this course. You are required to pass the course with a “C” or better to obtain credit for the course, to fulfill Gordon Rule standards, and to meet the General Education Program requirements.

GRADING SCALE:

90-100 = A70-79=C

80-89 = B60-69 = D

  • To earn a grade of “C” or better in this course, your writing must meet all of the following criteria for effective writing:
  • Achieves its specific purpose, as required by the writing genre
  • Considers and adapts to its intended audience
  • Develops logical and adequately supported arguments through the use of specific evidence
  • Carefully constructs and organizes ideas, paragraphs, and sentences
  • Effectively uses language, including correct grammar and mechanics
  • Integrates, cites and documents sources in MLA format

See the “Grading Rubric for all Essays” at the end of the syllabus.

ATTENDANCE: [If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to get class notes from a classmate.]

  • You are required to attend all regularly scheduled classes barring personal illness or emergency since no absences are excused. After the fourth absence, you will be automatically withdrawn from this course, or subject to automatic failure for excessive absences.
  • Three occurrences of tardiness will be counted as one absence in the determination of the attendance grade. At the end of the semester you will receive attendance points, which will be averaged, in with your other grades. You will be marked tardy if you are not in your seat when I take attendance.
  • Your attendance grade will be computed as follows:

Zero absences = 100 points; One = 90 points; two = 80 points; three = 70 points; 4 = 60 points

MAKE-UP WORK:

  • You will not be allowed to make up any of the in-class assignments, or homework. If the missed assignment is one of the formal essays and after the deadline, you must turn in that assignment within two days for the word count but not for a grade. No exceptions will be made to this policy, so please do not ask for special treatment.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:

  • You must do your own work; there are no exceptions. Plagiarism is against the policies of Valencia Community College and violates the basic moral principles of our society. Those who plagiarize or cheat in any way risk dismissal from this class and expulsion from the college. Questions about how to quote or refer to someone else’s ideas in a composition should be directed to the instructor before the composition is completed and submitted for a grade.
  • See Chap 17 in your textbook for information about correct documentation.

DISCUSSING STUDENT PROGRESS:

  • If you have questions about your grade on a particular assignment, come to my office during my office hours or make an appointment at a mutually convenient time. I will not discuss your grade in the classroom neither before, during or after class. You must read my comments, try to understand your errors, and be able to discuss your concerns calmly, politely, and rationally.
  • Do not hesitate to come to my office to discuss your progress so that you can improve and avoid the frustrations that result if you do not understand your writing difficulties.

TUTORING CENTER:

  • Valencia provides tutoring services in bldg. 4-101. You will need to make an appointment.
  • Don’t wait until you are failing to request help. Recognize your writing deficiencies and do something about them EARLY.

BUDDY SYSTEM:

  • Exchange telephone numbers with at least two other classmates, so that you can always be aware of the assignments.

Withdrawal Deadline and Policy:

  • You are responsible for withdrawing yourself from class. You must initiate your own withdrawal on/before the withdrawal deadline by going to the Registrar’s office (5-234) and filling out the appropriate forms to receive a “W.” After the deadline, you must initiate withdrawal at the department office (7-163) by the last day of regularly scheduled classes so that you can receive either a “WP” or a “WF,” depending on your progress in the class at the time of withdrawal.
  • If you who do not withdraw before the deadlines, you will receive a “WF” for the course.

Students with Disabilities:

  • Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide notification from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the professor during the first week of class.
  • The OSD determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities.
  • The East Campus Office is located in Building 5, Room 218.

Paper Return Policy:

  • I will return graded essays at the beginning of class within a week after I collect them or before the next written assignment is due. Please do not ask me whether they are graded since I will return them as soon as I have finished grading them.

CLASSROOM DECORUM:

  • You should not bring beepers, cellular phone, or other electronic devices (except in vibrator mode) that disrupt the class.
  • If you are late, do not interrupt the class but wait until either the professor invites you to enter or until you are certain no one is talking. Furthermore, do not walk in front of the speaker and take the first available seat.
