Valencia Committee Report

For June 11, 2013 Board Meeting

First meeting was held May 24th, 2013.

Attendees:

·  Casey Pena, Superintendent Field Operations, BNSF

·  Marla Molzen, BNSF

·  Lawrence Esquibel, IT Director, Valencia County

·  Adria Duran, Co-director Early Childhood Services, La Vida Felicidad

·  Ann-Mary McLeod, Grants and Contracts, UNM-Valencia County

·  Rhona Espinoza, Belen Chamber of Commerce

·  Jennifer Mastripolito, United Way of Central New Mexico

·  Ted L. Jurney, United Way of Central New Mexico

Topics specific to Valencia County:

·  Extremely diverse rural population comprised of small towns and communities

·  large geographic area

·  Higher rates of rural unemployment and poverty

·  Lagging Social infrastructure outside of main population center Los Lunas & Belen

·  Juvenile Justice completed needs assessment, possibly for Valencia County

One “ah ha” Moment:

·  Los Lunas and Belen Summer programs inexpensive alternative to increased rates of summer abuse and neglect.

Potential New Committee Members:

·  Resiliency Corps UNM-VC

·  Pilot Club – Belen and Los Lunas

·  Rotary Club

·  RRPS representative

·  Three Chambers of Commerce (Need to add VC & VC-H CCC’s)

·  Community Wellness Council

·  Belen Schools

·  Los Lunas Schools

Next Steps:

·  Need to meet monthly for the short term, probably fourth week of the month

·  Recruit additional committee members

·  Get copies of the needs assessment to review-Juvenile Justice Board

·  Look at media-News-Bulletin, Radio? monthly column?

·  Get the word out before next campaign to increase philanthropic base

·  Survey Monkey to determine needs?
