VA COMP: Final Study Guide

The Color Wheel

Analogous colors are groups of colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel, with one being the dominant color, which tends to be a primary or secondary color.

Positive vs. Negative Space

Positive space is the area in a piece of art that contains the focal points and images. The opposite of positive space is negative space, which is a blank area. We used positive and negative space in every project this semester.

Patterns are a series of lines that repeat over and over again in an organized way. We focused on pattern in our Silhouette Portrait project.

Value

Value is one of the seven elements of art. Value deals with the lightness or darkness of a color. Since we see objects and understand objects because of how dark or light they are, value is incredible important to art.

Mixed media tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink, and collage could properly be called a "mixed media" work. We studied Romare Bearden who was a social worker from Harlem. He was a master collage artist that used his Harlem his experiences in social work to communicate his feelings about society.

Printmaking:

Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints that have an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting. Except in the case of monotyping, the process is capable of producing multiples of a same piece, which is called a print. Each print produced is not considered a "copy" but rather is considered an "original".

Architecture:

Frank Gehry: is among the most acclaimed architects of the 20th century, and is known for his use of bold, postmodern shapes and unusual fabrications. Gehry's most famous designs include the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum in Spain.

Frank Lloyd Wright was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures and completed 532. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."

Jacob Lawrence

Lawrence is among the best-known 20th-century African-American painters. He was also from Harlem and a mentor artist with Romare Bearden.
