Using the library and online databases to find information

Print Sources

Books – Nonfiction categorized by subject – your career would be in with related subject or 331 (“Labor Economics”)

Biographies – About people in various professions – In alphabetical order of subject’s (not author’s) last name (ex: BIO GAT for Bill Gates)

Career Pamphlet Files – Look up career title on master sheet, see number, find pamphlet with that number (don’t re-file!)

Dictionary of Occupational Titles – Look up career title in beginning of first book, find number, look up that number in book(s)

Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance– Use table of contents – Volume 1: Career Fields (broad), Volume 2: Selecting a Career (by specific career title), Volume 3: Technicians

Young Person’s Occupational Outlook Handbook– Use index

  • Dictionary of Occupational Titles – Click on letter that begins your career title, click on range of words that would contain your career title, click on number next to appropriate career title
  • Learn More Career Resources – Click CAREER PROFILES, click on your career title (in alphabetical order), explore different tabs (main site can also be accessed through learnmoreindiana.org)
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook – Scroll down to the tan box – click A-Z INDEX in number 3, click on the career title that is most accurate

Sometimes you won’t find your exact career title,but you should be able to find something similar or in the same field. Try a variety of different search terms.
