Analyzing Graphs

Before you begin, label x-intercepts, y-intercepts, local maxima, local minima, and the arrows/endpoints.

Using only those points, you can find the

Domain: smallest x, largest x…..use parentheses for infinity or negative infinity and brackets if it is an endpoint

Range: smallest y, largest y…..use parentheses for infinity or negative infinity and brackets if it is an endpoint

Increasing: (starting x where graph goes up, ending x) ALWAYS USE PARENTHESES

Decreasing: (starting x where graph goes down, ending x) ALWAYS USE PARENTHESES

Maximum: Point at a peak (x,y)

Minimum: Point at a valley (x,y)

X-Intercept: (x, 0) the point at which the graph touches the x-axis

Y-Intercept: (0, y) the point at which the graph touches the y-axis

End Behavior: After labeling your arrows, use the y-values that match up with the corresponding x approaches infinity/negative infinity

Asymptote: where the graph plateaus…always write this as y equals a number

Continuous: No breaks or gaps

Discrete: Points are not connected
